Lakota wrote: Spotted, I think you are confused. The two pics are both of Ozzy the Appy. Sawyer is a palomino. Yes I was, I looked at the photo that Pharmgirl posted and thought it was Sawyer but faded, and the one with Nilei was the same horse, but now I remember that Ozzy was a few spot, I always think of spots on the horse when you say Appy. Well anyway "Ozzy" looks like he would be a gentle horse to work with.

There are many ways you can go about this, such as teaching him to lower by pressure and release. However I thought I would share the method that worked great for me. My horse would evade the bit and would keep is teeth clenched. So I gave him a horse treat, then would put the bit in the mouth and immediately gave another treat. Eventually i was able to drop giving him the first treat and just give him one as soon as he accepted the bit. This method worked great for him and was so easy. Now I don't have to give a treat but still do now and then to keep him encouraged.

I also read a method where the lady wrapped one of those candies that come in little sheets (don't know what they are) around the bit and the horse opened his mouth to get at the candy. But Lavonne's method works too. You could even hold the treat in your palm of your hand under the bit and slip the bit in when he gets the treat. Really, when you think about it, these horses are so good to even accept a piece of steel in their mouths.

I think those are called bit wraps. I'm too cheap to spend money on something when treats will work.

LOL, TN Trailrider, that is exactly what i did. I gave the treat first just to get him to open his mouth, since he was clenched up, then i put the bit in my hand with a treat. In order to get the treat he had to open his mouth and i slipped the bit in as i gave the treat. Lakota, they do make bit wraps, but fruit roll ups work just as well. I would have used those but did not have them on hand, so i tried the horse treat and found it worked quite well. If i used the roll ups, i would have only put some of it around the bit and not the whole wrap as i think that would be too much.

slipslider wrote: but fruit roll ups work just as well. Yes, fruit rollups is exactly what I was talking about. I have never seen them, so couldn't think of what they were called. Probably not as expensive as bit wraps either (put a name designating it as horse, cat, or dog specialty and the price increases!).

AHA! Glad it worked. If it didn't, at least you'd have had some candy to eat yourself!!
