I love rambling the more ideas the better. Using seasoned horses is a great idea when you can do it, and love the fact that a veteran is willing to help if owner is too nervous about it.
I had a stick horse that made the clip clop sound and the neigh, took it out to the barn and marched it up and down the isle. The horse's in the stalls about freaked (at least some of them) at first but after a few trips of this, they would perk up but not freak, would even come up to the door to sniff and check it out. Don't know when i might encounter that on the trail, lol. But i figure anything can't hurt, only help.
Once on a trail ride several riders including me came across a fisherman and his son, with all the fishing gear, backpack, poles were heading down the trial. I noticed horses starting to freak out, one tore down the through the woods before rider could stop it. The man and his son stopped to help keep the horses from freaking, but was please that my horses(as my son was with me on his little horse) just raised his head and looked, no freaking despite all of the others over reacting. So out of about 12 horse, only my two and the natural trainer we were with did not freak out.
It was not because mine had seen such a sight before, but because they have already been exposed to so much at home that kept them in check. So desensitizing does help.
