I have researched and read allot regarding EPM. There are many treatments and there are some ways of beating some of the cost. Just discuss with your vet the best option for you.

I agree with Lakota that EPM is not as bad as it sounds and I think many horses pull through just fine. And since you caught it early, that is definitely a plus. I feel good that your horse will make a full recovery. I think being young will work in his favor on this one.

;)

Sorry to hear about Jasper having EPM, but  thankfully you did discover it early.  I don't know much about it either, but thought it was from opposums too.  I sure will be praying for his recovery.  Please stay positive and keep us posted.

There is a new EPM medication coming out. It is a pellet you can add to the food.We were unable to get it :(   we started Jasper on the paste (marquis) on Saturday. The vet also tubed him with some DMSO to control inflammation as symptoms can get worse as the parasites die. The first 2 days he was worse but he has been better Tuesaday and today. He was up and demanding breakfast the last two days! The treatment lasts at least 28 days and the medication alone(anti inflammatories and the EPM paste)  has been 800$
Thanks sdlepal for asking about him.

I have a friend whose TWH got EPM, and was treated with marquis.  He is doing really well now after the 30 day treatment.

There are a couple of websites that have supportive herbs for EPM horses... Meadowsweet and For the Love of a Horse.  After the marquis treatment, you may want to give them a call to see what might help build up the immunity better.

When they demand their breakfast we know they are feeling better. I sure hope you get this under control, and it sounds like you are. $800 is a steep price for maintance. I am sure it will all work out. You didn't save him for nothing! Prayers going your way.
