I thought this would be a great place for this poll no i have found that you can tell how tall a horse will be by measureing from the correnet band to the middle of the knee  like if it meashures 15 1/4 in he will be around 15.1 hh and by a 1.5 years most horses have there length of leg developed . I have yet found a horse that is shorter then this meashrement . When finished gowing but i havent realy had that many to check .

So go out and meashure your full grown horses ..and lets see what happins

chris:)

Another way to tell on a new foal is to take a tape measure and put one end on the ground and run it up to the elbow.  Then hold the tape at that point on the elbow and rotate the one that's on the ground to above the withers.  That measurement will be accurate to within an inch.

Good idea!  I keep wanting to do this measurement  on Tootsie just to see what I come up with, but forget when I have her out.  Just now turned them back out.  She is 13 hh tall right now.  I want to do Casey's too just to see.  I sure hope she doesn't get as tall as he is.  She has shedded out finally and is pretty slick.  Yesterday I was putting them from the barn back into the pasture and she just follows the rest.  Then she took a bucking, rearing, running fit and everyone scattered.  So today I lead her out and will in the future so she understands to behave with me close by.  My daughter captured this picture yesterday when she was being turned out.

Pam, how big Tootsie is getting!  And adorably frisky!  I have a friend who just got a nurse baby, he's 3 months old and supposed to be haflinger/QH.  He is originally from KY, but she got him from a lady in Rock Hill, SC who gets these babies and places them.

I told her about you, this board and how much she could learn.  Hope she reads your posts.

So am I understanding Chris right by assuming that the measurement from the coronet band to middle of the knee won't change as the baby grows?  My friend will be interested in this info, but I want to tell her right.

Karen, good for your friend getting a baby.  I measured tonight and the measurement was 15" so that would be 60" or 15 hh right?  But I did see where this measurement was used but it should be when the filly/colt is 18 months old for a more accurate reading.  At least she should be around 15 hh.

Here is a recent picture of Tootsie. It was one of those hot days and I sprayed her off. She always stands and enjoys it. I don't remember how much she weighs now but she was 12 hh. She is getting long. I haven't done much with her. I take her on a walk to the mailbox once in a while and brush her. She seems to mind her manners. While the other 3 are in their stalls, she runs the barn isle. Doesn't get into anything and goes out to eat when she wants to. When I turn them back out in the pasture, she will kick up her heels some and try to jump on one of the other horses back. They just lay their ears back at her. She doesn't seem to run and play much.

Pam, She looks like she's growing good and she's really pretty.

I measured Mystery and Dancer both when they were babies and they both reached 15 hands like the measurment predicted. I measured from the coronet band to the middle of the knee. I measured Mystery's first colt (Copper) like that and came up with 16 hands and at 3 he's about 15.2 so it seems to be fairly accurate for me so far. We were worried for a long time that Dancer would'nt get that big but she just grew slow until she hit 4.   Now she's like me, big and wide. l1::)

Tonight when I went to feed the horses came running to get in the barn because the bommer flies were after them.  Before I could get to the gate my Tootsie was running around at a fast speed and she came to the fence and just jumped it like she was supposed to.  Ran on into the barn isleway, which is her space.  She had a fly on her rump!  Our fence is two strands of electric fence around 3-1/2 to 4' tall.  This is the second time I have seen her jump this height.  If she gets the hang of it I will never be able to keep her in.  Whats a mom to do?

Wow! Sounds like she has a natural talent. I've never owned one that desired to jump. I dunno, Pam. It would worry me to death, tho'.

Four foot isn't considered safe height for horse fence here. As my trainer used to say, "any cow can jump 4 foot." When I was a kid, we have a Brahma bull that could jump every fence on the ranch. He left soon. I'm glad you have plans to nip this in bud. The last thing anyone needs is a fence challenger.

Thought you might like to see a recent picture of my little red head.  She has a mop of a mane.  Underneath it is black.  She is getting an attitude and I carry a stick (white elec. fence post) when she is running loose in the barn yard.  You never know when she is going to pop up at you or take off running and twisting in cork screws towards you.  I think it is getting time to do some round penning for respect!  When she is a nuisance and I am working in the barn I tie her up.  That seems to keep her occupied for a while.

Pam, my friend who has a nurse baby too, got our trainer to come work with her and her baby recently.  Her little guy was being very disrespectful and the trainer said it really has to be stopped right away before it gets out of hand.  Undoing wrong behavior is harding than teaching the right behavior.

Tootsie is just darling though, I can hardly recognize her she's grown up so much!  They don't stay little long.  Know you will get a hold of her handle soon and hopefully re-direct all that energy.
