Yes, definately use the mellons then contact also your local hospital and ask if there are any Trauma Nurses available from the Trauma Unit that deal specifically with Head Injury Patients that would be interested in talking about their expearinces with people that had accidents from riding and not wearing helmets. Our county coroner has this presentation he does for highschools and Jr Highschools using old Coroner Photos from Drunk Driving Accidents, they are extreamly graphic and some parents have complained. But over all since the county has implimented this program, the drunk driving accidents/arrest specially among underage drivers has plummeted. Also you can show them just how snazzy and cool looking all the new helmets are that are sold by Troxel. And you can encurage individuality and also team spirit by showing them this website https://www.helmetcovers.com/ I wish I lived closer, I'd come and do a questions and answers thing or something with them, so they could meet someone that has survived though with some perminate damage, a TBI , split my head open on bed rock falling off a mustang 15h.. 13 stapes, scar, seizure and migraine perminate, like the rest of my life kind of thing. Didn't have a helmet because the place I was working as a trail guide thought we looked unprofessional with helmets. I thought we looked more unprofessional with out them.

One more thing about helmets. Studies have been done on identical twins. One had a brain injury and one didn't. The ones with the brain injury eventually got Alzheimer's and the other twin didn't. Zippy, I'm so glad to see a man in a helmet. Most won't wear them. I said a mean thing once. When our riding club was around, there was an elderly redneck guy who wore a cowboy hat. I plopped on the rock next to him at lunch break and pulled my helmet off. He asked how could I stand to wear that hot thing. I told him it wasn't as hot as his cowboy hat, was vented, and weighed less. He said he didn't know why he would want to wear oe. I replied that if he didn't have a brain to protect, then he didn't need to wear one. Point went right over his head.

Slip, there used to be a video out for the 4-H ers to watch about wearing a helmet. You might check with your extension office and see if it is still available. I told my husband about the helmet/melon theory last night. He said maybe I should start wearing my helmet! Yes, he has one and did wear it at first but not much anymore. He thinks he needs one just because a limb might fall on his head or that gives him permission to gallop at full speed. In most cases, you would just be setting or moseying through the woods when you would need them most. I have kept mine on for the last two weeks of riding and camping. The few times I go without it, it is a constant worry that something will happen because I don't have it on. Wish I looked as cute as The Blaze does in hers!

Thanks Sdlepal! It set me back about $125 I think, but it was totally worth it. Everyone wants one! Makes my lessons students beg their moms for one too!

I tried on a couple at our local tractor supply store. I hated the fit. Both were very tight across my forehead. Maybe I was pushing it down too low on my head? Can you gals give us some 'fit' pics?

@sdlepal: Check out the Helmet Covers link I put up. It will give you some other options for a more fashionable friendly look or something you might like better than the plain helmet. As for your Husband, I would just be happy he actually wants to wear his helmet again. Then if he decides he wants to go for a good gallop and he's on a sensable horse that can be brought out of gallop with out loosing it's head, and he's got the balance for it, I say go for it. Nothing more invigerating and free than that time when you're flying with your horse. @ Sharon: You could do what I did and contact Troxel Customer Service, tell them what you've found with your previous fitting sessons, and the size about you think fits. And what you found happen with the helmets. Different Helmets will fit differently, some have a lower profile than others. But they carry different Helmets for Different Shaped heads. And helped me with finding the right helmet TWICE now. I have a big round shape head, so a lot of helmets sit to tight on the back of my head and trigger my migraines. The lady was super friendly and recomended three different styles that would fit me better and not press on my head. Now just got to save up the money to buy one. I like helmets that have an option that allows you to tighten or loosen it on your head. Mine has to plastic pieces in the back that you pinch together to get it to fit just right. http://www.troxelhelmets.com/products/discipline.php Maybe this will help a bit??

Glad to hear so many people wear their helmets! I'm kind of a safety nut. Made my daughter wear one when she was a toddler and ride her tricycle in the grass. My sister-in-law said I was going to give the child a nervous twitch. Replied that I didn't mind her twitching as long as her noggin was all in one piece! :-) Last edited on Sun Sep 19th, 2010 02:54 am by sheilazav ____________________ The horse through all its trials has preserved the sweetness of paradise in its blood. ~Johannes Jensen |

Yes, Whatta, go to different stores and try different brands. Their shapes are different. The cheapest Troxel fits me well, but the other Troxels don't. I switched to an International and like that one even better. The helmet should come about halfway down your forehead almost to your eyebrows. It should fit snugly but not give you a headache. Snugly means that if you wiggle it around on your head it should feel like your eyebrows are moving. My preference is for a breakaway visor(fastens to the helmet with velcro) so that if you hit the ground the impact will knock the visor off and not push the helmet into the back of your head (Christopher Reeve accident?). Others like the fixed visor. Also look for a guarantee that they will replace your helmet if you take a fall (Troxel does that).

I've been on a horse without a helmet twice in the last six years. Both times for 5 minutes for pictures, then got off and put my helmet on to ride. Both times were definate sphincter tighteners because of the what-ifs. It didn't feel right and even on my good boy of a horse in my own yard it was a worry. I'm an ER nurse, and in my line of work we have a name for people who ride horses (and motorcyles and ATVs) without helmets: We call them ORGAN DONORS. And that is what I say to anyone who feels they have a right to question/criticize my personal choice to protect my most valuable asset. I tell them I don't want to put the people I love in the position of having to choose my nursing home. I also tell them to Google Courtney Dye-King, a top (Olympic) level dressage rider who is currently recovering from a traumatic brain injury received while riding without a helmet on a top level, well-trained, middle aged, calm horse at a walk in a familiar ring. It can happen. So I put my naturally curly, eek! helmet hair! in a braid, pull on a baseball cap when I take off the helmet, don dark "incognito" shades if it's particularly bad mess, and avoid mirrors and potential date material until the problem can be solved. It beats the alternative. Peg, who knows she is preaching to the choir, but wants to add her voice. We have several Troxel helmets and the one I like most is my pink trimmed Sierra. It is light enough that I don't usually notice it is there. Once after taking a break on the trail, I was riding along and I thought, my goodness I can really see the sun beaming down on me and the tree tops! Then I realized I didn't have my helmet on and we had to ride back and get it laying by the rest spot. My husband has a big head and the only one he could get to fit him was the Sierra . It actually comes bigger than most others and they have a squeeze type of adjustment which I have found outlasts the dial ones. TN, yes that is the video.

Yep yep yep- keep trying those helmets. I got one - I used the cheap ones and they fit ok- but IMO were not comfortable, both my daughter and I steped it up a notch and neither of us liked the next level either- both of them didnt fit right once we had them on for a few hrs- I found myself tugging at it and yes it gave me a headache that one was the Cheyanne. I then went to the Sierra and LOVE it. My head feels cooler with it on than without it. Even my daughter says so (she has one too) I rode w/friends and neither wore a helmet (both my daughter and I did) and the funny thing was they both wore baseball caps. I am the only one that 1. makes my child wear one and 2. I am almost the only adult that I ride with that wears one. And I dont care! I dont harp at them, because it is there choice but I will continue to wear mine cause- as someone else said- I dont want my family having to take care of me or put me in a nursing home because I didnt have one on. The funny thing is I tend to also have the calmest horses and I am the only one that has hasnt fallen off on a trail ride. You would think they would learn! Whatta- try a Sierra, cost a little more but its worth it for the comfort.

These are all great post and great ideas and information. This will help with my presentation of helmet safety. I will look into that video. thank you. I have a troxel helmet but did not realize they come in so many styles. I really like the look of the new Dokato. But for now will just have to stick with the plain black one I have. I look like a dork in helmet. I have a very small head, goes with my small brain. You know those little western kids hats you buy for children? Those are the ones that fit me! I always have to get some pad or something to stick in mine so they will stay on when I show in the western shows and yes my head will hurt if I have them on too long. I was never one to wear any sort of hat, because they look stupid on me. So I was not use to having anything on my head, so if I can get use to it, anyone can. I rode for 47 years without a helmet, then due to age, a fall, riding green horses and becoming a 4-H leader, decided it was a good idea. I thought they would be uncomfortable, heavy and combersoome. But was surprised to find they are not and I too forget that I have mine on. Now i also feel insecure and vulnerable if I don't have mine on. Guess they are allot like seatbelts, hated it when we were forced to wear one, but with improvements and getting use to it, now I feel insecure without one. Went trail riding with a group and no one except me and the young girl I brought with me were wearing one. Since I knew all these people except for one gentleman, no one said anything about it, except for the one gentlemen. He asked what that thing on my head was. Of course he was wearing a cowboy hat. I just told him that I had decided it was a good idea to wear one and let it go at that. But it sure did come in handy for those low branches, one guy got tickled when I went right through them and just ducked my head. Told him I did not have to worry about them with this helmet on. The 4-H club in just the last few years have made helmets mandatory at their events. I am so glad they have. Hopefully the younger generation will be more prone to riding with helmets.

I never worry about what anyone has to say about my plastic head. I figure they're the dumb ones, not me.

Fact that it right over his head is proof enough, too.

It's an old thread but a good thread and worth bringing back to the front. Check ski/snow sports stores for some great helmet covers for kids and grown-ups that are kids at heart. If the fuzzy raccoon cover gets somebody wearing a helmet regularly than so be it. http://www.crazeeheads.com/
