My pony Sunny and pup Flip have become about as much as best friends as I can expect but they are bonding more all the time. And have recently started playing together their own little "chase" game taking turns chasing eachother playfully. The other day my friend and I went out for a Sunset Trail ride and I left Flip at the stables with my Mom, since she is not quite "trail ready"  we're still working on teaching her to stay close to Sunny.

Well when I came back, Mom let Flip off the leash before I even got Sunny near the tie outs and was still on Sunny's back.  Flip came running at Sunny and jumpping at my legs because she was so excited to see me. Which also meant jumping and scratching at Sunny's belly.  Sunny stood there quiet and still while I petted Flip from the saddle and told her to stop jumping at Sunny's belly a few times and waited patiently for Flip to settle down and start wondering off around the stable yard like she normally does.  I have to admit even for my unflappable Pony, I thought that was something as I wasn't sure what she would think about that expearince.

She hadn't been on a trail ride in almost 11 months, and had never been off the stable property since I have moved her there about going on 4 or 5 months. And yet not one spook or nothing out of her. She only stopped and picked her head up once for a few seconds when a large dog approached. Then she just continued on. The first part of the trail we had my friend's Aunt and her mare with us, the mare is a very difficult barn sour mare that rears and kicks out every few steps. Sunny would just stop and wait patiently for the mare to settle so they could continue with us. When they got to where they had had enough and turned back, My friend and I continued on.

I'm so glad they are bonding and Sunny is so good natured that she doesn't mind when Flip gets all over her to be with you. My horse Taylor always loved dogs. She seemed most comfortable when there was a trail dog around. I doubt tho' that she would have stood for a dog trying to climb in the saddle with me like Sunny does.

I hope Flip becomes all you want want her to be. They grow up so fast. Keep us posted.

Thanks, Flip really is becoming an amazing pup and for only being a coming 6 month old, she really has gone beyond what I've expected . We take her every where I go pretty much unless it is super hot. I have a rare form of epilepsy and she is learning to predict when I have seizures. So we take her to malls, stores, restaurants, everything. When she puts on her vest and halti, she's a different dog.

Sunny before I got her was attacked by a pit. So she's still kind of weary about pits but the lady where she's boarded now, the BO lady has a whole pack of various types of dogs. And they come with her when she feeds morning and evening. Sunny definately knows how to put Flip in her place though, there's been a couple times that when Flip is not paying attention and gets infront of her she will put her head down and nip at Flip's back. Flip has this tendency to get "jealous" and tried to grab Sunny's reins a couple times, Sunny would just put her head down with her ears pinned and glare at her.

I love the bond our canine friends can form with our equine buddies.   I had a German Shepherd that for some reason my mare did not try to kill - probably because the dog never bothered her.  The Shepherd always insisted she escort me about the farm and make sure all the other critters were cared for.  She inspected the feed and water buckets, chased rats and horse flies.  This particular dog never bothered the horses and I often found the mare with her head over the dog pen with the Shepherd sleeping near her.  As time passed the mare took to following the dog during our chores.

When the Shepherd grew old and her mind failed her,  the mare gently herded her back home, using her front leg to steady the old dog's gait.  Shepherds don't age well and when the time came to send her to a better place, the mare stood near me as I injected the dog.   She trusted me and felt little pain.  I was surprised to hear a soft nicker when I inserted the needle in the Shepherd's vein.  In seconds the dog was gone with a soft sigh of relief.

The mare knew her canine friend was gone and fluttered her nostrils as I stroked the lifeless body.  I buried the dog in her pasture and for years the mare slept over that spot.  I was rather surprised at the bond they had apparently formed.  A quiet understanding that needed little encouragment.   A lesson we humans need to learn as we evolve.

It's truely amazing the unconditional bonds that can be formed between two animals. There is so much we can learn from horses too. I think that's partially why I love Ponyboy's methods so much, he teaches about the things you can learn from horses that can help improve your own life. And bring more balance.
