Anyone here with Icelandic horses/ponies? If yes, did the breed live up to your expectations? What are you using it for? And do you have any problems with your horse? If yes, which? And which is the preferred gait of your horse?

He he - sorry, lots of questions! Hope to hear from a few... Thank you!

I wish I had as many Iceys as you do!!!  They're beautiful!!!

I have a (soon to be) 17 year old gelding that I got in 2000.  I got him as a trail horse & he's exceeded expectations.   He's reliable - point him at a trail & he goes.  Doesn't matter if it's flat, steep, rocky or has a water crossing - he'll take it.  The only thing is that he wants to lead.  He outwalks non-gaited horses so we usually are first.

Last year I finally got him to tolt on a regular basis.  He still changes between tolt, pace & trot as his intermediate gait.  I know I should insist he stay in one gait but I don't.   He switches between pace/trot even when not under saddle.   He does enjoy a good canter/hand gallop when the trail permits - at times, I think canter is his favorite gait.

Wow, they are SO PRETTY!

Do you trail ride them much?  What do you think of them?  Are they comfortable?  Hot?  Sweet disposition and friendly?

Now that I'm on a new search for a gaited breed, I am interested in knowing what people like and what is most comfortable in the gaited breeds.

Thanks,

My friend has an Icelandic and she's quite a cuddly lookng horse! She has endless energy.  They joined us on day two of a trail ride with an Arab and my TWH and we got a short distance at the beginning and she tripped toppling Nic over her shoulder then rolling on top, breaking Nic's leg.  An unfortunate accident!

Nice picture and great scenery.  One of my friends has a white Icelandic .  He was so furry and cuddly looking.  He kept up with the rest of the big horses thou.  She said he might  have a short body but he has a big heart.  I have been amazed at their smoothness since I first saw them doing their  demostration at Equine Affaire riding while holding a drink.

Thanks,

They are extreamly comfortable, they don't tend to be spooky at all because in Iceland they are the "Top Dog" and there are no natural preditors of them other than humans. They are very sweety and friendly , some are more "Forward" than others and it would depend if you want one that is bred for Speed or one that is less "forward" and not bred so much for speed.

They either come in Five or Four Gaited,  Five Gaited will Pace along with their walk, trot, tolt and canter/gallup.  Four Gaited ones just don't Pace.

They aren't by nature though what one would consider a "Hot" breed like an Arab or Throughbred.

I actually bought a Kentucky Mtn/Icelandic last year.  I figured the mix of breeds would produce a nice trail horse.  Charles is such a sweet, kind natured beast.  The only issue i'm having is he dosen't have alot of stamina/energy yet.  He is only turning 4 the end of May but I assumed he'd have more stamina.  I've read the Icey's mature slow but he's beat after 1 hour.  Its tough missing out on long trail rides.  I guess patience is in order.  I can't imagine he won't get more energy since his breeding is known for durability and stamina?

I've been told he looks too thin and he needs more calories to gain more stamina so I've increased grain and hay since he's looking pretty slim after winter.  I've also done fecal and blood testing....all negative.

I'd be riding today if Lancaster County would dry out and stop raining!!!!!!!:?

I know there are exceptions to every rule, but I am gonna guess that he's taking after the Kentucky/Mtn side.  All I have seen, Rocky's too, are on the thin boned side.  But they usually have good stamina, so bet it'll come with age.

PM him suzystylist, he's not on here much but really is a wealth of knowledge regarding Iceys.  Your pony sounds like a real sweetheart.  Embrace his disposition and enjoy him for what he is.  Is that him in your avatar?  What a sweet, kind eye he has...makes me want to melt :P
