Geez, ::)       I get so side tracked!!!   I came on this site to ask a question and wind up getting caught up in the latest topic!!     He he     I love this place!

I just received my latest Trail Rider magazine and it has information on the Icelandics.  Does anyone own one out there?    I was reading that they can have up to 5 gaits!  The fifth one being called the"skeith".    They are know for the "tolt".  which sounds oh so comfortable.   Small in stature they are but can hold up to a 220lb person.     I went on some breeders web sites and found that they accept the "pace" as an accepted gait.     Now I know on my Rocky that we don't want "pace".  Kinda confusing.   Is it because they are built better for a pace?  I wonder?    I love all that hair and tail  and the fact they like to move out.    It says they don't mature till close to 5 but can be completley rideable well to the age of 25.   My interest is peaked but than anything about horses usually does it !

HI,  No I don't own a Icelandics either but they do interest me also. I seen a show about them on RFD tv and would love to learn more. They are cute aren't they. They showed them doing some of there gaits on RFD tv they did look smooth and fun to ride.

Hi Crissy,  I own 3 Icelandics.  2 are teenagers and 1 is 3 1/2.  They are wonderful horses with very strong bodies and minds.  I will say my filly is putting my patience to the test as she is a practicing Alpha Mare.  But once we overcome that she should be pretty special.  The pace you are referring to is called the flying pace done at a very fast speed.  Not all Icelandics can do that well.  They have to be in peak condition and very spirited to do it.  Most of the imported Icelandics are that way.  My geldings did come from Iceland  but are very laid back.  They have unusual play ethics, you will see them wrestling grabbing with their teeth and holding on like pit bulls, screaming like stallions, going down on their knees, rearing.  They actually have patches of hair missing on their shoulders and under their throats by spring.  The filly does not play and is getting much too fat- I try to pony her and she will stop dead and refuse to move.  I try lungeing her and she does the same thing.  I have started riding her a bit and she is very slow and stubborn.  So if you get one I would reccomend a gelding..

Thanks Dreamer

Interesting.   They play pretty rough I'd say.    You had mentioned your geldings were pretty laid back.   If they are not spirited would the rider still get a comfortable ride?   Would it be in gait?    I love to move out and go but I do not want a hyper animal.   I ride with our neighbor who has a wonderful tennuvian mare and can she move out.   she is not high strung and loves to go.   My Rocky can not keep up with her but than we are both learning her gaits.    I have 2 mares and a jenny so I have had enough of the female hormonal factor!    Are the icelandics personable?  I probably spend more time on the ground with them than in the saddle and I ride at least twice a week.

Thank you to Fourh mom for the web site .  I'll check it out.

Thanks again for the input!

Crissy

Yes Crissy most Icelandics are very in your face horses.  So being around them on the ground is great.  I just lead them with out a halter by holding their jaw.  Mine gait well, but do a slow walk when given the choice.  I much prefer a very fast walk like my foxtrotter, so do not choose to ride them as often as I should.  But I can let just about anyone ride them and no they will be safe.  so they make a great extra horse.  I purchased my Filly from British Columbia where there are quite a few good breeders.  They will let you come and stay and ride as many horses as it takes to find the one suitable for you.  They will also teach you all about them and their gaits and so forth.  I myself did not do this as I bought a yearling, but they have sent me all the info and it looks gorgeous in Vernon.  You only live once so if it is interesting to you go for it.  You will never no unless you experience them for yourself..

Yes, the lady who raises them in BC is named Robin Hood.  You can just google her and she has a large website.  I got to ride an icelandic at an agri show where I had a booth for TWH.  There was 22 breeds of horses there and the girls that had the icelandics was kind enough to let me hop on.  The mare I rode was pretty old, 25 I think, but she could go!  It was a lot of fun.  Same tech. for riding them as the walkers.  If I ever come across one looking for a home, I'd snap it up.

There's a breed feature article in The Trail Rider this month on Icey's.  Learn a lot about the history of the breed.  Fascinating.  Susan

Check out these pictures that I made here in Holland. I have three Icelandics. Two geldings (age 12 and 6) and a pregnant mare (age 7). I just love Icelandics! They are very straight-forward horses. In the paddock they look like donkey's, but when you mount them there Icelandic fire shows. They just love to go!

Hi,

the pace is considered 'the gait of the gods' by Iceland standards, and only a few special  horses can preform this thrilling gait which can reach speeds in excess of 30mph. These horses preform it in a VERY smooth manner, and having ridden one I will say it is smoother and WAY faster than the rack. These horses literally become airborn. These pacers command the big bucks, and are difficult to find in the US.

It is strange how the pace is considered 'undesirable' by many, yet revered by others.

This website says it all- check it out!!l1

We only say an Icelandic has pace, when he can perform it at a high speed. Pace is officially named flying pace. If you're horse can only perform it slowly it is not a good thing. Usually they can't tolt in a 4-beat then. We usually don't start pace-training untill the horse is a little older. The tolt also needs to be very established on a horse. The pace can be a bit of a gait destroyer when its not trained properly.

My six year old gelding is 5-gaited. I paced him once to see how fast he would go. I was very impressed with him! At the moment I'm concentrating on the tolt with him. It's still a bit pacey, but improving.

This year the world championships for Icelandics are held in Holland! I think there is goning to be an American team. My friend told me that there was an American who was champion 5-gait once.

http://www.icelandic-horses.com/  is a very good site. It mostly has Dutch horses on it. When you go to information an then web-links. You can set it to United States of America. You get lots of links to American farms.

http://www.icelandichorses 2007.nl  is the official site for the world championships.

enjoy!

Thank you, Villtir.

You make valid points about pacing horses and the above cannot be said enough. tu1

actually we here on iceland sy that "lull is gull" young untrained horses often are pacy. when i say pacy, i mean a "dirty" pace or "piggy" pace. two legs at the same side moving, but not a two beat.

but is showes potential, and by building the right mucles and training the right gaits at the right time usually gives very good results with both tölt and skeið.

the difference between skeið (skeith) and pace, is that skeið has to be a perfect two beat gait to be recognized. like villtir said. this takes a very wel conditioned AND talented horse, but it sure is beautiful when done right.

i have 7 iceys, but no skeiðers that i know of (3 are yearlings) i only trail ride, so skeið is not something i train or ask for.
