Hi Zack, I'm not really sure what a gaited app is. Could you please provide some insight? I have a half standardbred, quarter TW, quarter app cross that looks like an app. Many have asked me how I trained an app to rack so well. Nothing I've done - he is all natural. Racks with every step and never misses a beat. He is so tough and durable I am considering entering him in a distance race. Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve, and welcome to our board! To answer your question, a gaited appy is just that. An appaloosa who is gaited. Many foundation appys are/were gaited and that gait still exists today. We used to have a gaited appy who did the Indian Shuffle, which is a very common gait for the gaited appys. http://www.gaitsofgold.com/html/the_indian_shuffle.html (article explaining it here) It is such a smooth gait, and we loved the ruggedness and sweet temper of the appy with the benefits of gait. My mom has been breeding her with our TWH stallion, and we've gotten some beautiful fillies out of her with tons of color and wonderful refined conformation and gait. Those are Walkaloosas. So, don't be confused. A gaited appy is not necessarily a Walkaloosa. Hope this helped. Happy and Smooth Trails! Jamie

Hi, I breed and raise Appaloosas in Alberta, Canada with a focus on Indian Shufflers!.. a totally accidental discovery, I might add. These guys are wonderful, tough, colorful, awesome temperaments and superb ride. To date I have 3 gaited mares (one retired back to riding) and a gaited stallion. These are all Appaloosas with no other gaited breed involved. It is taking much longer to develop my program because I have chosen to go this route, but, I feel more loyal to my breed than if I were to outcross. I also have a yearling filly that I believe is gaited (not sure yet), but her grandfather was so she may carry some of the genetics anyway. We are expecting 3 foals by the Indian Shuffler stallion in May, two from the gaited mares & one from a non-gaited mare (all Appaloosa at least 3 generations of Ap X Ap). We are getting very excited - these last few weeks seem to take forever! I am hoping to be able to chat with other Shuffle fans on this board. Linda

HI: I bought this mare in 2000 with the intent of breeding her to our arabian stallion for some colorful dressage horses. However, I discovered that she and the foals appear to be gaited. Now, I must plead ignorance......I didn't know appy's came gaited. Their walk is a rolling long overstrided walk. Does this have a name? The trot I suspect is an Indian Shuffle but am not sure. This mare really ought to be in someone's breeding program who could use this great ability to produce such movement. She's not registered. Traced her to a NC horse dealer and where she came from before that no one knows. Anyway....any one have any thoughts on the gaits or where I might market her or her offspring? Is there a classified ads for gaited appy horses? Attachment: Star Side View Pose With Movement Good Action Summer 2002 1.jpg (Downloaded 317 times)

That looks like an old-school foundation type appy. I'm sure she is gaited as the foundations many times are. Don't let my mom see that picture Just a tidbit of information, gait was bred out of appys long ago. Many times the settlers did it so the Native Americans wouldn't have the advantage of gait. Of course then "breed standards" came about and took out a lot the gait too...among other nice qualities. It still pops up today though which is so cool. Gaited appys are making a strong comeback nowadays and foundation bred appys are quite in demand. I would check around a bit on the background of this horse. Jamie

Thanks Camanae. Appaloosas that shuffle are getting easier to find! Mine are also Colorado Ranger Bred. It doesn't seem to take much to breed the gait out - just a couple generations of crossing to TB's, QH's or Arabs. It's such a smooth ride. So sad that the Appaloosa Horse Club doesn't have a class to promote the gait. I'm hoping to find a place to show next year with one of my gaited appaloosas. I've put 2 of them on the classifieds under "other breeds" since there wasn't a listing for apps. Maybe with more folks joining, the appaloosa could be added? I have an appaloosa who is so afraid of people. Doesn't want to take commands. I really think this horse is a little dense. Can't sell him because no one can handle him he's a gelding and 8 yrs old. Registered. I certainly won't try it. Bought him off a farm in TX and new nothing about this horse except he was handsome 14.2 hands gaited. i've had him since Dec.2004. Next time I buy bet I'll try riding him first. They said he belonged to a lady that raised him and rode him some then this man bought him for his son and he went off to college. Who would have thought this horse didn't want to be ridden. Stuck with Appaloosa

Hi Steve, I raise foundation bred, shuffling appaloosas. It's a very smooth, ground covering, energy efficient gait. I've learned that you just don't go riding in the company of WP horses - they have to jog or lope to keep up, if the friends I'm riding with aren't asking me to slow down. Mine don't have the racking action, so I'm clueless on that one. Bet it's sharp to watch and ride, though! Sig http://www.appaloosa-creek.50megs.com

Sounds like you bought a mis-treated horse. It can take alot of time and patience to bring him around. Once they've learned not to trust people, they become very challenging to work with. Any chance you can get the seller to take him back? Sounds like you were severely mis-led, misinformed. Good luck! Sig

not meaning to step on any toes.. "ouch"!!! but an appaloosa - to me has more of a human side... if you mistreat one - they don't forget!! and good luck trying to get back their trust!!. trust has to be EARNED with them... I think Brenda Imus said the same thing to me... about them when I first became a member.. my phantom is that way...he hates fly spray... and will warn me... about coming at him with it... he has a look in his eyes and I - know to respect him as well. it is a give and take with them ... they are not a breed ( I am not a breeder) . that has the i don't care - do what ever to me you want. now... the appaloosas today have little true lines any more... got to go back to the old style breeders for that... in the 70's they called them jug heads..I always wondered why???

Both of my foals this year gait. One was sold in utero and will be leaving on the 20th. I bought a mare last fall that no one knew shuffled. I was shocked this spring when I was taking pics and she was shuffling. Sent her out for 30 days training this summer (wasn't started when I bought her) and trainer absolutely loved her. Said she's the smoothest horse he's ever ridden. Sure made me smile! She's in foal for a May baby...so there will be another little shuffler available, maybe 2... I always feel bad for folks that have bought a horse that has people problems. It's not the breed that needs the blaming, but former owners/trainers in most cases. I attached a short video link showing the sold colt's shuffle and a pic of my dun mare being ridden by the trainer. http://s241.photobucket.com/albums/ff250/Knightcreek/?action=view¤t=IM000548.flv Sig, Knight Creek Farm, http://www.knightcreek.com Attachment: IM000517.JPG (Downloaded 234 times)

Love the photo's!!!! would you say an Appaloosa ... is one that trust is earned and not just freely given?? it reminds me sooo much of the Nez Perez Indian Tribe, they didn't trust the Goverment - for good reason !! . and never forgot what was done to their ancestors... I cannot read anything on Chief Joseph - without crying... your horses and your site are just beautiful !!!!

Thanks! I just love this mare so much. She's solid, no charcteristics, but expect her foal to be loud colored. Stud is a fewspot. The shuffle is a 4 beated gait, at all speeds..means you always get a smooth ride. Looks alot like a pace which is 2 beated, but it's not. This mare shouldn't have shuffled...didn't buy her for her gait...was very surprised when she showed it and tickled when she showed it under saddle. Bought her for her conformation and bloodlines.. This mare rolled in high on sweetfeed and alfafla...almost dragged me to the barn..I don't feed alfalfa or sweetfeed and put her in a pen with a round bale of grass mix..waited for her to "cool down". Went through the OMG...what did I buy? LOL...but once she got leveled out..we bonded and she's here for life. I worked with her for a almost a year before I decided she was ready for a trainer, and hit pay dirt! The pic I shared was only 2 days under saddle! Trainer said she never bucked. Here's my email addy: knightcreek @yahoo.com (take out the space before the @) I love allbreed, but sure wish there was a way to stop folks from changing the pedigrees. You're welcome to share the pics and video! My daughter did the web page for me and the home page changes every month to reflect the season. She's currently editing a pic of Quagga dressed up for Halloween and ready to go trick or treating - LOL. Think he enjoyed playing dress up as much as I did. Will attach a sneak preview unedited.
