I ran across a Foxtrotter/SSH that I like the look of color wise and I think she has a pretty feminine type head. But once I let Jerry know she was part Foxtrotter he was a OH NO. Her mother is a unregistered palomino foxtrotter and the father is a registered SSH, they said they have papers to register her SSH. My question is does a horse from a breeding from 2 gaited parents always result in a gait foal ? and I know just because she is part FoxT that does not mean that she will foxtrot. She is 5yrs old born/raised on their farm out of there mare only thing they have done with her is some ground work and put a saddle on her at 3 yrs old and rode her about 30min, and turned her back out and have not done anything with her. They said she is real gentle and that her parents are smooth riding saddle horses. But I have already bought 2 green broke horses and I feel like my luck just has to run out sometime, and only having a saddle on once is too green for me, but my farrier is a trainer. Another But, the only reason I really would like a 4th horses is because we have 3 and I kinda would like to be able to take 2 on a trip and leave 2 at home, But the one I leave at home either Mira or Cruz really do just fine for a couple days alone, so I cannot justify another horse just to have a even herd. So I am trying to convience myself to NOT go look at this mare, and they think she is only 15h which is to small for my taste. Here is a picture of her. Or I could wait and maybe buy my farrier's new TWH colt born a few months ago, and I know it would be raised and trained right, but then again I want a mare. And he said he may keep him for a stud, but isn't he pretty !

Is there a reason for the 'oh, no!' about her being part foxtrotter?

Why is Jerry prejudiced against MFT's? I have found the breed to be extremely nice - even tempered, not overly reactive and intelligent. I like the fox trot because it feels like you're floating on air and moving very fast (well, fast enough for me). There are some that will rack, some that foxtrot and some that do a smooth running walk - it will depend on conformation and training. I'd say go for the paint - she is gorgeous.

Smile she is a cute lil thing . as far as the MFT thing gos i have seen the foxtroters do wonderful running walks they cant read there papers its is al conformation and mental wiring. and i love the SSH seems to be a great stocky built with nice saddle gaits. she looks just our horse lil joe . no do you want or need another horse...lol...that is a personal question as i have 7 in my pasture right now and struggle with that on a regular basis. and do you relay want to "break" another horse good question too...getting to the point no more unbroken horses for me i would send them them out for 30 days but someone that trains like i want is hard to find. As far as resale value get her registered just makes all the difference in the world when selling. her size at 15 hh is popular for the older trail rider (easy to get on) . The big thing is how naturally dose she gait will she gait on a lunge line dose she have a nice calm personality she she friendly... Most of all do you have time to ride this horse at least 3 times a week to to get her trained. it is a big commitment. good luck lol

Jo, I think she sounds great and I like her looks. I can't help with experience with the FT breed, have only ridden one (which I loved!), but I love her size. That's my Lacey's size and for many reasons I think its perfect! I am short (5'3"), but for taller people it is large enough to mount, dismount easily, put bridle on, duck under trees on trails, easy to groom, etc etc on and on. I like the comment Parelli made about horse size (and he's tall), "Admire a tall horse, but ride a short one.". I have to add that my DH would add another plus for a small one and that would be if you fall off and it sits on your leg, be glad they aren't big!

Spotted, if the price is right I would go for it. The Foxtrotter is going to add a little stockiness, so even if 15h is a little short for you guys she should have enough substance to do well. She is a knockout too, you should be able to resell at some point if you decide you don't care to keep her. Give her a chance, might be the best thing you ever do. Mares can be super sweethearts

Hi, Lil' Joe is a reg.spotted out of Battle Colors lines. I think she is a beautiful mare!! My first guess is that she would probably do a saddle rack after you get her in shape. If I was looking for another horse, I would pass on her because she wasn't ridden lightly as a youngster. More than likely you are going to have some attitude issues. It's like taking a teen-anger and trying to teach him to do things he has never been asked to do. If you don't know anything about training gaited horses or getting them to gait, you might also have some issues getting and keeping her in her natural gait. Horses are cheap right now, find one that has been ridden a while, and one that is the height you want. Crystal

He just thinks he does not like a foxtrot and he also does not like Paso Fino's, really he only like a black TWH, just his preference, where I only like Spots . {Most of all do you have time to ride this horse at least 3 times a week to to get her trained. it is a big commitment.} Answer to this CC is YES, but reality of it, will I do it, is NO ! I have not even ridden Cruz consistently enough in the 4yrs I have had him to set him in gait. Is there a cut off time age wise were if you do not get them set by a certain time frame they will not be able to be set, kinda like " if you don't use it you lose it " thing ? I just kinda felt like my 2 BIL's both have 5 horses a piece and one only rides 2 and the other rides none of his always rides mine, so why can't I have another horse to admire its beauty, because that would be the biggest part of it. She is just dirt cheap and the owner is unemployed and only about a hour away, but really I just can't, but she is what I was wanting IF there was going to be another horse added.

CC this is exactly my gut feeling about this mare, and that is why I kinda wanted to throw this info out there so yall could make sure I see beyond that beautiful coat. I am by no means able to train anything with a sour attitude and I was scared that is what I would run into, Cruz is just such a puppydog that I have not had any problems with him and Mira is just such a level headed mare that I have just been lucky to have such good green horses for my first 2, so I don't need to push it, I can teach them to gait and know what to do good enough to not need to send them off, but I just don't have that committment when they do everything I want them to do when we trail ride. My farrier is a gaited trainer of 30yrs but his breed is ASB, so I am scared he would make my horses to hot for me to handle, he said he would not but I know what he likes.

Hi,It doesn't sound like you are going to be talked out of buying her. I have learned from experience, even a cheap horse that is beautiful can cost you a lot of money in training and sometimes medical bills. So, be prepared to pay for at least 90 days of training. No, there is no age cutoff for teaching a horse to gait. As they get older, which usually means they have been ridden longer incorrectly, it just takes longer to get the right "muscle memory". Some horses are just more naturally gaited. Meaning they can just do it with no help from the rider. Sometimes the rider, not knowing what the gait is suppose to feel like will let the horse get lazy and get out of gait. Then they learn to do it wrong, building the wrong muscle memory. Crystal

I'm glad you are being so honest with yourself, Jo. Eyes wide open keep us from making mistakes. Personally, I love, love, love a foxtrot and if I could pick and choose the horse of my dreams, a foxtrotter would be my pick. It is probably the only gaited breed that my QH loving husband would be most interested in owning for himself. But as for: why can't I have another horse to admire its beauty, because that would be the biggest part of it.Your heart might need to consider rescuing a neglected or special needs horse instead and making that horse a thing to admire instead of forcing yourself to make a commitment to a horse that would likely be better off ridden and used regularly by someone else.

As I walk out to the barn to shovel #hit, from 3 horses that are stalled nightly and I do it at least 360 days of the year, I WILL NOT BUY another horse, LOL The owner is a older lady and the horse was bred from a stallion out of a nice barn, I had prior contact with, so felt good about her breeding, she is just getting to old to ride and could not afford to lease her barn and take care of there 3 horses and said if the time ever came that she could not afford them she would sell, but she does not want to . I think my aggrevation with Cruz and Coal is that they both are not as natural as my mare Mira and it takes more effort to get them gaiting correctly and hold them in it, as where Mira is so pushbutton it is just more enjoyable to just get on and ride, so I would just rather ride her than have to work on Cruz.
