Thanks everyone. Even if I can never get him to gait, he is a keeper.1l I am so in love with this guy. I have been spending hours just being out in the pasture. DH asked me if I was ever going to clean house again. Told him there was more to life than a clean house.LOL. Getting ready to look on the Internet again for harness and cart. Would love to have a wooden cart but looks like I am only able to afford a metal. I might wait till the carriage sale in Perry GA in May before I get anything. I have found a harness shop that has a Betta/Bio harness used, but I can spend $50 more and get a new one. He said that it had only been used a few times. As to what kind of cart anything that is safe-not rotted or a rust bucket. I do like the easy entry style. The guy that owned Coop had a sulky but it was rotted on the shafts, fractured and dry rotted tires. Even though those could be replaced I didn't think that it was worth $500. I keep telling DH that he could build me one but he just says that it would weight a ton because he likes to "over build". It would probably look like a Sherman tank. Talk about being safe. Poor Coop probably couldn't get it to roll.LOL

Softride: I used to go to Perry all the time, if you go maybe we could meet up. My advice to you would be to go with a Forecart. They are expensive new but at Perry you may be able to find a decent used one - they are very popular and don't last long at auction. When you go to look, try to take someone with you who knows a little about carts. There is a LOT more to the safety of a cart then just how it looks on the outside. Particularly with the inner workings of the wheels. Also, it is very very important to get a balanced cart for your pony. Shafts that ride too high up or too low down at point of the shoulder and/or is not properly balanced in the rear will put an undue heavy load that they have to carry and can stress their shoulders and back - taking your pony with you to actually try it on is the ideal situation. A Forecart is very sturdy and heavier duty than a wooden cart and is a lot more forgiving towards mistakes made by the driver. I have owned both leather and bio harnesses. I prefer the feel of leather, but if I had to do it all over again I would definitely go with the bio. It is just as strong, MUCH easier to clean and gives just a little extra polish. If you're just driving for fun you could get away with a 1/2 sweeney collar, but I always used a full since I did a lot of farm work with my horses. Of course, a pleasure collar or breast collar will probably be recommended to you. They're just a little too thin for my liking and a Forecart is a heavier vehicle. A good place to start might be to check on e-bay and see if you can find a used copy of "Implements for Farming with Horses & Mules" by Sam Moore, who by the way is usually at Perry; at least when I was going years ago. I know you won't be farming, but there is a lot of good info. in there (plus, you'll see me and my Norwegian Fjord mare working the stone boat sledding winter firewood in, on page 254 Let me know if I can help you and I will try, again what a good looking pony! T.

Fireandice, would enjoy meeting you at Perry. I usually go with a couple that I have known for 20+ years and boy do we have a fun time. We will probably take a short stay when we usually stay the whole time. I found a great wood cart there last year but I didn't buy as another person went and bought several wagons and carts before the one I wanted came up and there just wasn't enough room. It is a good thing as it was a Cob size and I need a large pony. There is so much to learn. I have met several drivers that go to Perry every time and they have said that if I go they will be glad to help me also. Hope to see you May 11,12,13. I'll be the one drooling to1 on all the carts.

Oh good, having people with you to help is so important. So are y'all staying the whole time, or just for the vehicles? I always got so bored when the antiques were being auctioned - those hotdog stands start getting a little too much of my money - have you ever gotten one of those ice cream doo-dads?...oh GOD they're sinful, anyway if I'm not riding, I'd love to go and at least meet you T.

Hey that looks like DHl1l1l1. We will be there Wed. pm and just stay the night. I feel the same as you the antiques are boring but that is because my house is filled with early attic. The stuff that isn't quite antique but not new either. And NO, I shouldn't be cleaning house. The stall and barn YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks GJ. My favorite color is a blue roan but bay is next in line. I finally rode yesterday. DH took pics of me on the cell so that I could see if I thought I was too big. I forgot that I can't send them to my email as we disabled that feature. When I first got on Coop, he humped his back. I felt like he wanted to let go with a good buck but he didn't. I had let a person try my saddle and the stirrup were about four inches to long. I went back to the barn (I rode in the pasture) and had Johnny hold him while I changed the length. after that, he rode great. I got about a dozen steps before he broke into a trot. The people that owned him before would just push him through his gait. I don't know if he will ever gait but that was the first ride He has already gained weight. He doesn't look so scruffy. Since I wormed him, the hair is falling out. I am going to worm him again because I saw worms in his apples. He must be loaded. I need to take pics along the way to be able to see the progress.

Sounds like you are well on your way to making best friends and riding partners with him. It is so hard to get a new horse or pony and start over, isn't it? But, I am sure he will be just fine for you. All that hair will go and he will be shiny and beautiful in no time. Glad you are happy with him. My mom bought a new horse this winter, we live in Maine and we hauled to the further end of Mass to get him in January. We just wormed and he was full of bots. I don't know if you guys get those down south, but they are a menace here in Maine. We will give him a couple weeks and dose him again. My mom went out and scooped ALL the "piles" and took them out of the pasture. Nasty! I am so looking forward to riding and today we got hit with yet another snow storm, it's like a blizzard here, has been since about 10:00 this morning. I feel like it will never end this year. Heavy sigh. Nice chatting with you, hope to see you around the posts in the future.

I'm glad that we aren't having snow just 90º. (You know that I just had to rub it in.) As to bugs, You name 'em we got 'em. We might not have moose flies but we have deer flies and they bite pretty bad. They will put a welt on you in no time flat! And spiders! We have a real pretty spider shaped like a banana hence the name-banana spider. They are very colorful with red yellow and some other colors mixed in. They run around 20" long when they are on you hat looking you in the eyes

They are really a gentle "giant". You see them mostly in the fall. But of course everything looks bigger when you see it nose to nose, sort of. Don't worry, most people carry crops and that is not for hitting horses. Since I always ride with a crop my friends send me first. They really complain when I don't get the spiders that are over my head. You know I just LOVE small horses, always have and always will. Those 16H horses put the rider up higher than I can reach on my shorties. LOL. And even If I could get all the spiders, WHY should I be the only one having all the fun? I just love to hear them squeal. I also wear a wide brim hat for just that reason. I have gotten where I really dislike spiders. Today while I was gardening, I picked up a spider with her egg sack. I not sorry to say that I was a mass murder, squished them with my shovel. I didn't let one of those babies live. Cruel aren't I? LOL LOL

Tina, I am with you...I am never, never, never riding in FL. I got chills and felt sick just reading about those banana spiders...s2!!!! When I was a young girl, my parents would take us to FL for several months in the winter and I had one of those huge Palmetto bugs crawl across my face and I could just see him out of the corner of my eye! I nearly passed out! Still remember how horrible it was. I don't like riding in the front on a trail ride in the woods for these very reasons! Spider webs in my face...oh no...not me! So I just tell others politely to go first w2.

Aw-w-w. C'mon, are y'all afraid of a little biddy spider? Those banana spiders are harmless, except for the cardiac complications they cause. I get caught fighting the webs, almost get dragged off my horse, they are so huge and strong. You get used to them Now I could tell you some snake stories... Ah! The glorious Florida wildlife!

I don't mind riding in front on my 16.1 TB. Those little spider webs don't bother me. Also, I tend to duck under them!! If I'm laying down flat on his neck, they'll hit the little guys still!! But, I draw the line at creepy, giant spiders. I suppose I'd get used to them if I had to. But, I don't plan on it!

l1 Just look what I got started LOL. This is what I think the spider is saying- - - Oh no, here they come again!!! I just get my house built and here come those people on top of those animals. How would they like having to rebuild after those hard heads come bashing through their webs? Have you ever seen anything so scary in your life? those big eyes, they must have a thousand. And those noses, they aught to be able to smell a gnat flying by in the scent of horse poo. I have never seen creatures that look like that. I tell you that is scary and to hear them carry on about a perfectly harmless spider, WHAT IS THIS WORLD COMIN' TOO???????

TheBlaze wrote: But, I draw the line at creepy, giant spiders. LOL, those spider stories make me want to go ride. When I was trying out my QH, Bo, we were riding through deep woods and the girl who owned Bo was riding her new mule. Now, I was hoping she would sell me Bo, she was still undecided whether to keep him or the mule... the mule had a tendency to be a little antsy. With the mule in front of a heavy wooded trail, suddenly she swiped into a big, nasty web and this huge spider was crawling across her face. She freaked out automatically... screaming, waving her hands, hollering, jerking that mule right and left, I thought she would never quit, mule getting all dancing and ansty, crow hopping, trying to figure which way to bolt... I had to holler repeatively the spider was gone, to calm down, but truth it was hanging off her back. I thought she was going to scare that mule to death or it was gonna totally freak out too. It was funny, afterwards, but those spiders can scare the most fearless riders. Usually I let Chris go first on those heavy wooded trails, or I carry a long stick and wave it over the horse's ears... that usually swipes the spider before it swipes you. tu1

Good to hear you are having fun with your new guy. I am not coming to Florida to ride either! We have enough deer flies and spiders too. On those rare times that DH lets us lead, I sometimes trick him and duck the webs and I can hear him back there giving us the devil! We gotta have some fun once in a while. I don't know what kind of spiders we have because when I hit a web, it is plastered all over my glasses.l1
