Hi Charrie! I am sorry that your husband isn't doing any better. I know God is in the miracle business, so we will pray for his will to be done & give you strength. I am glad to hear that the Imus mullen bit did the trick for you! I am going to order one today. Keep us up to date on your progress & your husband. Sharon T.

Hi. I'm sorry to say that my husband has not shown much improvement with his mental abilities returning given the extent of the damage he sustained. He is still in the long term brain injury facility, still receives feeding through a tube and is trying to get back on his feet (with maximum assistance) since his broken hip injury. I keep praying everyday that he shows some improvement. My horse did well the first couple weeks back from the trainer then began the same old habits again. I decided since reading the testimonials on the Imus Comfort Bit to give it him more try (because I was just about ready to sell him) so I ordered one. From the first use he has changed drastically. He is very responsive, soft, and has not given me half the problems he used to. I love the bit and I think he does too. I work him with figure 8's and serpentines at least 30 minutes before we do any serious riding and that gets his attention onto me and not on trying to get away. Thanks so much for asking.

Thanks. I'm excited about sending him to a trainer. Hope it will change some bad habits and make our time together better for both of us.

Great Charrie! Hopefully your trainer this trainer is on-board with the natural philosphy. Make sure you are a part of this process too (as it sounds like you are). A trainer who works only with the horse is only working half the equation. Of course the other half of that is you. On second thought, I'd say it's 1/3 because you and the horse "together" make up a third of that equation (I hope you get that...it makes sense in my head). Keep us posted on your progress! Jamie

Camanae maybe we could start a try a bit program so people could try a bit that won't work before they buy one that won't work, then they could could pay us a finders fee. I'll contribute my box of junk that don't work. Rick

Thanks. Actually yesterday I was wandering around in the different areas and found an item of interest. Someone had posted about trainers in Michigan and one just so happens to be in 10 minutes of me. I contacted her and she is going to work with him and me beginning the middle of June to try and correct some of these issues. If it wasn't for this site, I would never have found her. Hopefully we can find out the problem and Tory and I can enjoy riding once again.

Hey Charrie, If this is that last bit you ever have to buy, you won't go broke, unless you buy, try, buy, try, buy, try, ok, we did that Camanae, Handlebar D Ranch

Thanks Celia. Nope, I live in Michigan. I have tried a tighter bit and a looser bit and many more bits in between with little or no success. He started this annoying habit about 5 months after I bought him. I had his teeth done and was told they were long but not out of control. I think it has now become more of a habit than anything and that's what most people are telling me and that those types of habits are hard to break. No clue on how to break a habit!!

Hi, Your horse sounds like mine, except he's a foxtrotter. I had him in training for five months where the trainer had him in a wonder bit. She said that for the bit to be effective you should have two wrinkles in the corner of the mouth. I got him home to ride on the trails and he started to toss his head and try to spit the bit out. He also got mad and tried to buck. Totally frustrating! I tried to find another trainer to come out and work with him but no luck. I was lucky and found a local cowboy who had worked with horses since he was a young boy. He came out and said the bit was too tight. He loosened it till the bit was resting comfortably in the horse' mouth. He got on him and my horse started the head tossing but after awhile he figured out that the bit wasn't hurting him. I had this guy come out to my place for a few times and within a week my foxtrotter was a different horse! I hope my experience helps you and if you live in Western Washington let me know. I can give you this guy's number. Good Luck.

Charrie, I just got an Imus bit because I had trouble with my horse not gaiting well.I was riding in a natural hackamore and she would push right through that and get into a vey uncofortable pace, Got the bit and it was like riding a completely different horse. The responses you get about this bit are from people who have like your self had troubles and went looking for an answer. Nothing works on everything, but I would make a bet that if you tried this bit you would be one step closer to solving your problem. Rick

I am very tempted to try it, sounds like it works well! I really have not examined his mouth that closely but I certainly will now.

Welcome to the board! 3h said: "What kind of mouth does your horse have? Low or high palate? Thick tongue? Alot depends or the structure of a horse's mouth as to what bit works best" As a horse matures, the roof of their mouth comes down, by the time they are 10 or 12, the roof of their mouths will have lost the arched pallett and are often nearly flat. A snaffle is broken in the middle, when you pull on the snaffle the broken center moves up, it may be gouging the roof of his mouth. He is a full grown adult by his age so I would recommend trying the imus pinchless bit. It has an arch to it that discourages them from pulling their tongue over the top, find a picture and examine the three kinds available and think about the mechanics as they work on the inside of their mouth. The snaffle works on the lips and tongue. It is quite natural to graduate a horse from a simple snaffle to a mullen mouth that isn't broken in the middle like a snaffle. The imus has side pull rings to use like a snaffle for transition. Feel free to experiment, carefully, your horse will let you know when you find one he likes. Ours hasn't pulled the tongue thing since we put him into the imus pinchless. His head tossing and tongue fussing was definately related to comfort and he's stopped now. Best of luck and keep riding, Camanae, Handlebar D Ranch

Hi Charrie, I saw where you say you have tried many different bits on your horse. What kind of mouth does your horse have? Low or high palate? Thick tongue? Alot depends or the structure of a horse's mouth as to what bit works best. For instance I have a horse named Jack that has a very low palate and a very thick tongue. I tried a regular snaffle bit on him and he went absolutely nuts. He was flinging his head so violently that he almost threw himself on the ground. I've never seen anything like it. Snaffle bits (two piece, broken in the center) tend to poke some horses in the roof of the mouth causing some bizarre reactions. I ride Jack in a sidepull most of the time, but have found that he will also accept a bit with a mullen mouthpiece (got a mullenmouth pelham bit off of ebay for $5.00). Is there any chance that you could borrow some bits to see if you can find one that works? Hope this helps. Linda

Hi. Tory had his teeth done in November so just about 6 months ago. Right now I'm using a simple D ring snaffle. I've tried numerous bits of every type and style and still have no luck. I'm having the vet out Saturday for their annual shots and I will have him check to see if he sees anything unusual. His wolf teeth were already removed when I bought him so that is not the problem. I purchased a very nice Billy Cook saddle for him which is a good fit since he has a pretty large body. I tried an English but that just didn't seem to work, sat too high on his withers. So, I'm sorta out of ideas. If I had to buy more saddles and bits, I'll have to take out a loan, LOL. This guy is going to put me in the poor house.

Hi Charrie! Welcome to the board! It seems like your trying real hard to help your horse, good for you! Some people wouldn't even try! From your description it sounds like something is hurting him. I know you've tried a few things but here are a few more suggestions. Brenda has a great article on saddle fit on the website, you may want to check it out. How long ago did your horse have his teeth done? Young horses need them done more frequently. My four year old foxtrotter gets his done every six months and the older guys (12,21,25) every 12 months. You might want to have the vet out and do a complete physical on him just to make sure there is nothing else going on. My 21 yr old foxtrotter was starting to slow down, nothing I could put a finger on but not quite right. I was about to chock it up to old age when we had him tested for Lyme disease. He tested positive! Glad I looked into it! What type of bit are you riding him in? If the bit is hurting him adding a caveson will just make it worse. Check out the Comfort Gait Bit, my older horse who had gone the severe bit route(running through them etc.) loves the bit. Hope this gives you some ideas ! Good luck!
