We wussed out.  :P

When we saw the snowy weather report we decided against going - and I'm glad we did.  Poor Grace was on high heels all weekend - snow balled up in her shoes. :(

Sooo next weekend is the barn raising, the weekend after that is the  MTRA work bee.....then the Blossom ride!

Hey DQ,  Went out today for a drive as it is rainy and uuuuuuuugly.  Ended up driving to Brighton Rec.  Looks like there is a trail ride happening there this weekend.  The sign at the staging area said the camp was FULL.  It wasn't when my husband and I were there but we passed quite a few rigs on our way out.  Sure wish the weather was more cooperative.

You'll probably get this message when you return from Ionia.  Hope you had a great time in spite of our climate!

Pat

Can you meet us Sat or Sunday?  Or heck stay overnight Sat till Sunday!!  :P

Everyone wlcome of course!

We'll be camped somewhere in the middle or at the bottom of the hill in the campground - finally gonna need one of those bigger sites...

I'd love to meet more MI pals to ride with.

Hi DQ - LONG time!  Do you remember me?  Sorry, I haven't been online but I'm back now.  Sounds like you are doing well and getting lots of riding in.

Hi Dandy and Laurie6.  I'm from MI as well; between Lansing and Ann Arbor.     I'd love to hook up and ride with you gals if you don't mind taking it slow.  Dom is my four (the end of June) year old gelding.  I got him last year and we are working on gait and all the other issues involved in growing up and becoming mature.  He's doing real well.  We have fun playing the Parrelli 7 games together.  At my age I DON'T care to end up in traction ;) so I play it safe by taking it slow.  He is a pacey guy and I'm praying he'll grow to be more set in a gait as he matures.  I am soooooo excited to be getting an Imus 4-beat saddle soon from a friend who is in need of selling it as he needs a much wider tree for his horse.  I have the halter/bridle ride-n-tie and LOVE it!

We have Kensington Park, Highland Rec and Proud Lk all within 15 minutes from our home.   Brighton not far either but I've only been there once.  All nice places to ride.  I'm familiar with Kensington the most as I've ridden that park since I was a youngster (friends horses).  Hope to talk with you soon.

Pat:)

Ionia - April 23, 24

I'm taking a trip to Ionia for a shake down cruise with my new rig.  Would love to meet and ride with anyone interested.

We have a '01 Ford F 250 - dark green (go MSU!) and a white Featherlite with a grey strip - MTRA #s posted on the nose (2049 and 5194).  We'll pull in around 2ish and leave late Sunday.

Hope to see some of you all there.  It's been so dry Ionia ought to be a nice ride.

Okay, that worked.  That is the map on the MTRA web site.  The lengths between camps are shown on the site - to get a bigger view go to:

http://www.mtra.org/index.html

We have a ride coming up in May, From The Mac Bridge south to River Road, and if you'd like to ride along you need to be  a member for 30 days previous so sign up quick!

The maps are $ 5 for a member, $ 10 for non-member and they show the cross state trail, the camps, how to get from one to the next.

Another source for MI:

http://www.michiganhorsecouncil.com/for_sale/faitel_book.html

This is a great book HOWEVER there are some errors in it.  Call before you travel to the places listed to find out if directions are accurate!  :P Also if you are expecting 50 miles of trails and it turns out to be 5 that is a huge problem.  ::)(The Bluffs is listed as 50, but we found it was *15* miles of trails.

Another source is to Google the names of the mentioned places: Brighton, Elba, Sleepy Hollow, Ionia.  These are further south in the state, a bit of a haul for you, and the riding is much nicer around the north (IMO).  BUT these would make nice weekend destinations too, for a change of scenery.  Call ahead to be sure there is camping for your horse!  Some of these southern MI places can't accommodate horse camps (yet).

Have you been to any of the Cross state camps mentioned?  South Branch is lovely!  A bit squishy this time of year too, though.  Goose Creek is sandy and is prolly pretty dry now, but I don't think I'd try to cross Mayhem Swamp for a few more weeks.

The Luzerne Boardwalk area should be thawed out and Geee-ORE-geous now too.

And it is almost mushroom season!  Morels anyone?

BTW, there is a nice get together in Goose Creek Memorial day weekend for anyone interested.  Would Laurie6 or Dandy be interested in joining?

Oooo Gladwin!  You are nearish to Goose Creek in Frederick and South Branch Camp and River Road camp, and McKinnley Camp, 4 mile camp and Luzerne too!!  All north and slightly east and west of you.  :D  I am green with envy!!

Try this

Ionia is really squishy in the spring I've found.  They had to close various loops last year due to the amount of erosion caused by water and horse hooves.

Sleepy Hollow is a bit short - only 8 miles of trails there.

May I suggest Elba/Holloway with 30 odd miles of dryer trails, or Brighton for same?  Waterloo is also drier then Ionia in the spring, with 25 miles or so of trails (and no bugs this early in the season).  ;)

Also for other trail riding MI folks, we recently had a + Coggins horse put down in the state. I am making a copy of my horses negative tests and putting one in my saddle bags, and one on the dash of my truck for all to see.  Before trailering out PLEASE have your horse tested and post those negative results.

What about April 17 for a get together??

Anyone interested in the sleepy hollow park or ionia?

Jen -

Bummer about this weekend!  I'll just go alone then, as usual.  ;)

I know a few gaited owner/riders in the Lansing area, but no one seems to ride as much as I usually do.  Generally I set a date, place and time that are good for me and then go even if I don't have a companion - prolly not the safest way to go but if you wait around for others you are usually still waiting and life is so short as it is!

I'll post the next time I trailer out, and maybe we can meet up.

Therese
