Hey, guess who I just met?????  On a recent trip from SC to MD, my husband and I met and had dinner with Bonnie (Liteshodwalkers) and what fun we had!!!  r1

Anyone else met another from the GOG board and will post a "meet and greet" photo?  I think this would be so much fun to see.  What do you think?

Here's our picture: Bonnie's on the left and I (Karen) am on the right.

That is a precious picture!  I am so glad you got to meet.  Hopefully one day more of us can do the same.

Sounds great. I've always wanted to meet everyone. Brenda has tried a couple of times to open her home to us for a big GOG meet and greet. But she can't possibly schedule something that will satisfy everyone. I'm glad you and Bonnie got to meet in person. You are both such great gals. I bet you got along like sisters right from the git-go.

OK, that does it!  I'm going to plan a GOG Community trail ride for NEXT season (2011).  That gives us plenty of time to clear our schedules (most of this year's best dates are already filled on my calendar.)  Let's decide on a place that has the following:

Campsites w/and w/o trailer hookups
Standing stalls for overnighting horses
Lots of scenic trails
Nearby lodging for those who need/want it
A central U.S. location

More?  Ideas?

In the meantime, some of you might consider going on 'recon' missions to scout out the perfect GOG reunion site!

Oh Boy, oh boy!  Brenda, that sounds super!!  Yes, I think that sounds like such fun!  I wonder if having a couple of them - one on East Coast and one on West Coast, might not work better.  After all, we can trailer our horses only so far!  We are talking major miles here....just a thought.

"Recon mission" sounds like fun too.  I am ready to go!

OMG!  That would be SOOO much FUN!!!!

My sister bought a place in Missouri.....her thinking.....it's about the 'middle' of the country - so she's halfway to anywhere. lol

I know we have several members from that area.....and I'd be certain they could point us to the 'right' place.  She's been down there riding the past couple months and keeps sending me pictures of places they go.  DAMN HER!!!! l1  She's supposed to be finding a 'spot' to park my new rig....since the 'road' to her house isn't LQ trailer friendly. lol

Yes, I'm also thinking one ride, middle of the country.  Kansas or Nebraska?  Though I hear great things about South Fork, in TX, that might be a stretch for too many people.  I understand IL has some outstanding ride opportunities as well.

Though I've worked all over the country, I have only trail ridden in NY, PA, and MO (except for short hacks after clinics, etc.)  So those of you who are accustomed to riding at a lot of places will need to chip in with advice!  We want scenic trails that aren't too challenging, as a number of members here are middle aged or better, and have knee/hip/back problems.  Plus, we want to have lots of chances to gait!

Another thought:  I could sponsor a ride here at my place (wonderful trails), and then someone on the West Coast could set something up in that part of the woods.

There are thousands of acres of trails in MO....Mark Twain National Forests is certainly a hot spot.
We have Greensfelder, Castlewood and Forest 44 here in STL.

You are probably going to get so many places you'll have to take notes.  Cambridge, Ohio has the largest state park in Ohio, Salt Fork.  It  has a great horse camp with great and scenic trails.  There is no electric at the camp but running water and accessible to the shower houses, hi lines and tie areas only.    There is a fee to camp.  They have a great lodge that would accompany horseless members and I believe it even has a conference room that we might be interested in.    This really sounds like fun!

When we are on the mb it doesn't seem like we are spread out all over the states and world.

I also vote for one towards the west and one towards the east.  For the east, East Fork Stables in Jamestown, TN, is one of the best riding/camping areas around.  They have about 150 electric sites (some with water/sewer), some primitive, nice 10x10 covered stalls or you can picket, and also cabins for rent.  Most are 2-bedroom, and one is 3-bedroom.  Several of the cabins are off-site, but there are 2 on-site that have their own 4-stall barn at each cabin.  They have a covered pavilion and can cater meals (and the meals are fabulous) and 100 miles of trails on the Cumberland plateau on 12,000 private acres.  You won't run across any 4-wheelers, jeeps, bikes as they are prohibited.  It's considered to be the premiere riding place in the south.  Check it out at http://www.eastforstables.com.

Lynne, we need to add a "k" to your link, but oh my that place is beautiful.  I wonder how many would come and need to rent those cabins?  I counted about 14 cabins in total, some with more than one bedroom.  Think that is enough for those of us who don't have LQ trailers?

My husband said he is interested if we could rent a LQ horse trailer?  Do you know if some of the trailer dealers rent them?  In this economy, I bet they would.  What do you think?

I could really get excited about TN as a location.  But then I am not too far away!  That scenery is gorgeous!

I have read about this location a lot.  We even got brochures at Equine  Affaire one time.  The guy we talked to was really nice.  I bet we would have to book further than 2011 thou, it looks pretty booked up.

I've been up to East Fork many times and have stayed in several different cabins as well as my trailer.  Most of the cabins have a double bed in each room.  The Scott House has 3 bedrooms, 2 with doubles and 1 with twins as well as a sofa bed.  You can always put sleeping bags on the floor and get more people in the house.  When they first opened they charged a flat rate and didn't care how many people you crammed in the cabin but now they charge for what the cabin holds and and extra for extra people.  It still comes out pretty cheap though.  The trails are great.  They have trails for easy rides, moderate, and what I would call extreme (although Painted would probably call those easy).  I've never had a bad time up there .. well, once.  In 2006 (at a group ride I got together for the TN Horse Council) my horse fell  down a steep rocky descent and landed on top of me.  The resulting cast on my leg kind of put a damper on my trip up there ... actually for the next 6 months but that's a whole nutther story.  They are prepared for emergencies, though!  I don't think anyone would be disappointed in the facilities, trails, or the friendliness of the staff.

They have organized rides througout the year, but have many weekends available.  One thing to remember though, is that the ride should be planned for spring or fall as it gets terribly hot and humid in the south in the summer.   If enough people get together for this, we could probably reserve a huge section of the place for GOG folks.

It looks like a great set-up, and fairly central to most of us eastern folks.  OK, I vote for a fall ride - my horses will be well conditioned by then, whereas they may not be up to par coming into spring.  I no longer have my LQ horse trailer (sigh), but should be set back up for camping again by that time as well.

Do we have a volunteer who will offer to check out dates, pricing, etc.?  And how long do you all want to make this ride?  I vote for five days!

I can help out with getting information. Do you have a guess as to how many people you think would come? I can start working on it tonight and maybe call tomorrow.

Ok Guys,
Here is what I have found out so far:

I am assuming we do not want to do an organized ride, so here is the information I got if that assumption is correct:

September and October are their busiest months, and these would be the most difficult to book rides because they have organized rides during these months. They said we would have to wait until August 2009 to book anything, because that is when their schedule will be finalized. If we do it in either of these two months, it would most likely have to be Sunday through Wednesday. Other months would be easier to schedule.

She said the easiest way to set this up would be to have a group registration penciled in, and have each individual set up their own accommodation/deposit etc.

Choices for people are:
Campgrouds: (~18-30 dollars a day)
LQ trailer
Tent camping

Cabins, some more rustic than others (see website for details)

Choices for horses are:
Stalls $15/night or $97.50/week
picketing $5/night per horse or $35/week
corral panels (campground b only) $8/night or $45/week
paddocks $10 per horse per day , limit 4 horses per paddock

It sounds complicated.  I wonder if we won't be better off going somewhere where we can just rent a facility?  Or. . .something like Golden Hills Trail Rides in Raymondville, MO.  They have bunkhouses, a bunch of full camper hook-ups, motel rooms, and will provide 3 square meals a day for a very reasonable amount of money.  We could literally go at any time - though fall would be best.  They have tons of trails, stalls for the horses, the whole nine yards.

There's another place like this I was invited to attend last year, but couldn't make it work.  I'll check my e-mail to see if I can get the info back.  Let's not limit ourselves to a single option at this early stage!

East Fork has always been at the top of my list of places I want to go. I think we can simplify the reservations if we just pick out a date. However, riding in the Spring or Fall would be best but I'm betting that the Spring and Fall calendar will book up really fast. I've never been, how would you describe the trails, TN Trailrider? Can you choose easy, moderate, difficult or is it a mix of each?

I can tolerate temps in the high 80s and even in the low 90s for riding. Of course, my favorite time for riding is in the Fall. I wonder what the temps are like at Golden Hills, MO in the summer? I don't ever remember it being too hot when I lived there as a kid. I believe there are plenty of watering opportunities at Golden Hills to help cool us off. The only thing about MO that stays in the back of my mind is Tornado season. When I lived in MO (many years ago) tornado and severe storm warnings were very common. I remember lots of tornados and lots of mud slides. :)

I might have to fly to Brenda's while I'm lame and let her lead me around on Belle. I'd call that a great vacation ride right now.
