how would you describe the trails, TN Trailrider?
You can get a mix of just about anything.  It is located on top of the Cumberland Plateau.  With 100 miles of trails, you can take your pick.  Some of the trails are fairly flat, across open fields, dirt roads, and thru woods.  They are good for unconditioned horses and also buggies.  Then you can go moderate mostly thru wooded trails, and some steep hills, but not too difficult and if you take it slower and easy an unconditioned horse can do fine.  The more extreme trails take you down off the mountain and thru the Obed River several times, then back up the mountain on the other side.  I say "mountain" and I'm sure some would disagree, but hey, in the south here, a really really steep hill is a mountain!  This calls for a horse and rider in good shape.  The footing can be quite rocky in some places, but I do know folks who have done it barefoot.

The rides to not have to be guided.  They provide excellent maps and the trails are very well marked.

It's not any more complicated to set up then it would be at any other place.  I put on two fund-raising group trail rides for the TN Horse Council in 2006 and 2007 when I was head of their Trail Committee.  Just select the dates you want and people call in and say they are with the Brenda Imus group and make their own reservation.  East Fork can cater meals (great meals) and you don't have to worry about a thing.  They have a big covered pavilion with a kitchen.  Find out how much they charge for the meals and that is added to the camp/stall fee.  Back Country Horsemen of North GA are doing this for their 3rd year.  Their cost for the meals is $60 per person and includes 3 breakfasts and 3 dinners.  Lunch is on your own.  EF can also arrange to get a local band or dj to play records if you want to hold a dance at the pavilion.  That would be extra cost, but if you add the extra cost onto the meals they'll collect that also.

After you select a date, the most work you would have to do is just get word out about the ride.  It's up to the individual to make their own reservation, and EF collects the money.  It is nice to have someone from the group up in the office to welcome folks on arrival day, but not necessary.  The pavilion can be reserved for an opening night social and greeting from Brenda.   The folks there are very easy to work with and they have done this a ton of times so it doesn't daunt them at all.   If EF is having a problem with a fall ride, can I suggest a spring ride perhaps in May?  July and August are terribly hot and humid.  I'm a wuss, and won't be there if it's in those months.  I'd also like to suggest that if you want to do a 5-day ride, that you select any combination of days that includes Saturday and Sunday.  Some folks might only be able to get up there for a weekend.

The same amount of prep will have to go into any place you select, and if you select one that doesn't usually cater to big groups you will have to do more work.  Believe me, catering the food is the only way to go unless you just want people preparing their own meals.

I've heard that Golden Hills is a great place to go also.  You can also go to just about any of the commercial trail ride places.  They usually open their campground to other groups when they aren't holding a big ride.  They will have stalls, electric hookups, and some may have cabins for rent but probably not as many as EF.  They have pavilions also and might consider catering.  You can find these in just about any state.  If you get Trail Rider magazine, you will find a lot of them listed there.

OK, East Fork it is then!  But it has to be a fall ride, as neither horses nor riders are in condition for several days of great trail riding in May, around these parts.  Remember, we often get snow in May!

I have a call in to East Fork, but they were out of the office today.  I'm going to arrange a time for the ride - probably sometime in September - and will then let you all know what's up.  If nothing is available at all during Sept./Oct., we'll have to revisit the topic of where to go.  Let's all keep our fingers crossed!

Fingers crossed! And Toes!

Oh, and I hope this doesn't sound insensitive, but will you still be at the Midwest Horse Fair in April with your broken arm, PB? I am making travel plans....

Yes, I will be at the fair.  The arm is healing nicely, and the Dr. says by that time I won't be riding yet - but will be allowed to handle horses, etc.

Taking a nice walk right after this, though I've got a mountain of 'to dos' on my list.  Being so laid up for weeks, combined with a hard winter  - and just discovered my thyroid levels are way off, to boot - has left me with very little strength and stamina.  I want to be at the top of  my game for the upcoming show!

See you there!

Sharon, have you ever done any driving?  That might be a good place to start!  Any of PB's horses drive?

You know, Neal and I could become Wagoneers. We have some friends who can help us learn all we need to know. However, right now, I won't even lead a horse. Neal won't either. We are still both too unsteady and slow on our feet. Maybe next year.

Oh, gosh, Whatta, I was thinking next year...not this year or at least not now.  I have several friends who think there's nothing like driving, so just thought it might a new horizen to be considered.

Of course you meant next year. Forgive me. My brain is on meds - I should pay closer attention.

So yeh, next year - plenty of time to heal up enough to do some stuff. w2
