Hello everyone. I just got back from a trail ride with some old riding buddies. My husband and only riding partner was on midnights this weekend so I took my horse and we went by ourselves to meet them. I have not driven a trailer for about 9 years so it was a little nerve racking at first. I did miss my partner though. One of my friends was diagnosed with breast cancer last summer and she is still recovering. She has a big black walking horse and she really enjoys riding her and being with friends. Another friend rode her Icelandic today and he was so cute and fuzzy. He got kinda hot because of all his hair and it was warm today. Last week she had her Paso and that is the one everyone took a ride on after the trail ride. It was my first time and very thrilling. I also rode my friends black TWH which was also my first time on one of them. My SSH is not so smooth compared to them. He was kinda a fruitcake today. The Quarter horses was too slow and the TWH's was a bit fast for him. I think he just got confused as to what he was supposed to be doing! It was good for him though to ride amongst other horses. I wish I could share a few pictures but I would be here all night shrinking them and getting them to post. Just thought I would share my nice day with you. Anyone else ride on this pretty fall day?

We have been under water for 4 days now. I could not even see my driveway. I had three huge trees come down in different areas across my fences. I lost two sections in my pasture and one in the yard so as of now I have no where really secure to let the boys out. Hopefully tomorrow we can get it patched until it dries out enough to replace those areas. My husband and one of our friends were at least able to get out there and get the trees cut up and off the fences. I have the heavy gage no climb horse fence and the trees ripped right through it. These were huge oaks that came up by the roots. Oh well farm land next time....no trees. rsmoody

Oops I got off on the weather and forgot to say glad that you had a wonderful ride. I did get out last weekend to a really fun and large ride. Took my youngster and he did great even with 300 plus horses and riders. Who would have thought he would have been able to handle that at this point. He never took a wrong step, thought it was a blast. We may end up making it after all. rsmoody

Glad you had such a great time. I meant to ride as it was gorgeous today. But, I've been working on clearing some of the woods out back. Spent all day burning brush ahd my arms hurt to much after. I'll get a ride in tomorrow though.

Hi Pam, I love to hear about terrific rides! You overcame your anxiety and went on your own.. good for you. I'm never that brave. It's grand that you had a chance to try out all types of gaited horses.. which of us wouldn't love a day like that? Today was lovely here.. the sun was out and we were drying out after rain. Rode my boy in the arena 'cause I don't ride alone on the trails... Tomorrow is gonna be another stunner here.. and I'll be out trail riding with a gardening friend who I've discovered loves horses (!). Give me a month and I'll have her in lessons.. a year and I'll have her owning her own horse! No pressure of course...lol

Hi Storm, I hope you have a great day tomorrow. Sorry all you Easterner's are having such a wet week. I forgot about the weather up/over there. We have not had any rain for over a week. Maybe we will get some of yours this week, sure could use some.

I was able to get out and go trail riding. Went overnight camping with my 8 year old son and we rode around 13 miles. Wanted to go back this weekend, but would you believe niether one of my sons wanted to go. So I ended up cleaning out the barn and washing my trailer instead. Hope by next year I will have other horsey friends that will join me then.

I remember when I camped every other weekend with my kids, I was even a bad mom and picked them up early from school and sometimes they missed a day or two. But we had some great times and lots of memories. They are 27 and 30 now with families of their own and no time for horses. But every time I am out on the trails I wish they could see them again , some are the same and some have changed over the years but the campgrounds are mostly the same. Hopefully, one day they will get back into it. Enjoy your young one, they grow up so fast!

Good for you! Hook up and go - that brings forth some sort of empowerment doesn't it? Sounds like a great time to have good friends and a group of fine horses to ride and even share. I would think the SSH would fit just great in the mix. Hope you get to do that again soon.

On Friday the 13th I traded my cute donkey for a 3 1/2 year old MFT mare. She had shoes on and was purported to be a good girl and trail worthy. That evening once I got her home I outfitted her in tack and rode her around a bit in the round pen. She was definitely green to a bit and did not know yield to pressure. She was a big space invader on the ground. She knew go and she knew whoa and overall, she seemed to be a sweet heart. I took her for a walk and a train came by and she hit an awesome rack as she attempted to flee, but I had her on lead, so she did not rack far LOL! We then went over to the neighbor's to visit her big drafts and donkeys. She handled most everything well, so I decided I would take her out for a pre-test trail ride the next day with a friend. Right before I left on Saturday, another friend contacted me by e-mail wanting to know when I could come over and deem her horse was safe to ride. I have some basic ground test rules and games that all my horses must pass before I take them out on the trail. I kinda felt silly knowing I was about to take a horse out for a trail ride that would not pass them. Yep, I was planning on stealing a ride. Turns out my new steed was very recalcitrant about crossing water. None of the classic tricks worked to get her to go in. I ended up on the ground and in the water schooling her. After a lengthy battle of wills I did get her across the bog and little creek at the beginning of the ride. I was drenched from the waist down. It was a nice day, but only around 60 degrees with a breeze. I did not dry off. Soon we had to head back. My friend thought that surely my mare would cross the water no problem going home. I parked her nose into my friend's horse's tail, but she was too savvy for that trick. She ended up really throwing a conniption fit refusal and I ended up on the ground again to school her and once again standing in frigid water. After another battle of wills I got her to cross, but she went at mach 10 nearly knocking me over. So, I decided to try to have her do it again, but slower. Well, at one point while I was carefully walking away from her and about midstream, she decided to cross, again at Mach 10, knocked me flat and ran over the top of me. Ah gee, I could not leave well enough alone. Then she wanted nothing to do with re-crossing and it was another protracted battle of wills before she caved and rocketed across, me narrowly dodging her. We then got to the bog and she wasted no time rocketing across that, dragging me behind her like so much ballast, but hey, at least I was behind her! So, I finished the day with a half dozen hoof marks from stem to stern and a few nasty gouges from the sharp rocks. My first time getting trampled. You know, some days I should take my own advice! But it really was a nice day for a ride! [4]

I rode the Kubota for my vacation! Awwww man, my tail is sore! The Mahindra is just as bad! Bouncing all over the place. Strapped in...hay baler screaming at me to Stop! Stop! Bales of hay rolling all over the pasture because the baler kicks 'em out real good. Stabbing them with the spear to get 'em in line. Gears grinding. Motor growling oh, wait that's my stomach... Man, I gotta go on vacation!

Oh that sounds wonderful - sometimes I wish I had someone to pick up and go with when I want to - then other times I enjoy my time alone with my mare. We're just getting over the rain here in PA too - so we stuck to the arena. Tried out my new Imus Comfort Training Bit. She did really well in it. Still pulling and sticking her nose out a little, but I think a lot of that is habit and hopefully that will change as she gets more accustomed to this new bit. About driving the trailer by youself - I am the same way - it makes my arms rubbery. When I reach my destination I have to get out of the truck and shake my arms out. I am so afraid something will happen to my best friend in the back. I started taking my mare for lessons once a week and it has been good for both of us - since I have to force myself to drive the trailer every week and she gets to go to a new place and still pay attention to what we're doing. Glad you got to enjoy your horse this weekend!!

Wasn't too nice here in Northwest NJ on Saturday, but it was glorious yesterday. I took Logi out for a nice long walking trail ride. We met people walking & biking, just enjoying the day. It was especially nice, since there was a lot of clouds/drizzle during the week. I could tell he was feeling warm - he never once asked to move out! Even with a trace clip, 70 was a little warm for an Icelandic.

I also got a great ride in at Ft. Mountain State Park on Sunday. Weather was in the low 70's and Sam has a heavy winter coat already so he was sweaty with the dirt pouring off him. Scenery and leaves were awesome. My friend on her Warmblood was cantering to keep up with Sam's rack. But since he was out of shape, it was a tough ride for him coming back down the mountain on the rocks and he was one tired little pony when we got back even though we walked about 3/4 of the ride (tough trails).

I am enjoying everyones weekend stories. It is funny how you groom your horse (especially those with so much white) and you think they look okay. Then after a warm fall day they sweat and you see all the yucky, foamy dirt running down them. I didn't feel so bad after looking from my horse to the little Icelandic. He was a fuzzy, foamy mess! It is still warm and pretty out today but back to work we go.

Well weather has turned cooler here now and I am about ready to winterize everything and hang up my spurs. I do get out once in awhile for a winter ride, but not often. I am just not one for cold weather riding. I tend to do as the bears and hibernate. I am just too old and achy now to ride in cold weather. But love the fall and spring days!!

It was cooler here today too but we loaded our two horse trailer up and headed out. DH forgot to put the jiffy jack and tire changer in this trailer so we stop for breakfast and the store before heading the 15 mile trip back home "just in case". Well we start out again and half way there the TRUCK tire blows out. Now these are brand new tires just put on yesterday. Well, the equipment for the trailer will not work on the truck so we dig behind the seat and pull out all the tire changing equipment that goes with the truck. Finally we head back to the tire shop and he doesn't have another one in stock so back home we come. We are probably the only trail riders who haul their horses around to eat and go shopping. It is a must to have two of everything if you have two trailers. I think the horses was glad to get home. Then DH was pooped so he lays down. I get the tractor out to feed round bales of hay. Before I get thru the gate, the one herd of 8 charges thru to the barn yard galloping and ripping grass. Lucky DH was in bed or he would have been ripping my +++. After I distributed all the hay I got the feed tubs and feed out and they came running back into their pasture, all but two and one was my son's old App. that I would like to shot! I out smarted him with feed too till I got the halter on him and took his grain away. He wasn't deserving. So now I feel like I have been on the trail all day.

sdlepal - I am sooooo envious of your nice weather. We just had another torrential downpour with high winds and nasty thunder and lightning. Plus they are calling for more of the same throughout the night and tomorrow So glad to hear that some of you are getting good weather.
