Hi - I'm wondering what everyone thinks about changing a horse's name, particularly when they're all grown up and seem to know their name.  I've heard all sorts of reasons why you shouldn't - from "it's bad luck" to "they'll be totally confused."  But some people seem to have no qualms about doing it and their horses still seem normal and nobody's been struck by lightning. ;)

Anyway, I am itching to change my new horse's name because it just doesn't seem to fit her, and I'm getting advice from all sides. What do you guys think?

Thanks!
Julie

I just about always change names on any animal I get if it came with a name,  never bothered any of the species.

Hubby horse was 4yrs old and named Beamer when we got him, we changed it to Coal and he does know his new name very well and I think he prefers it IMO.

Go ahead and change it.  I think horses are more accustomed to their owner's voice than anything else.  For example, my mare's name is Jaeda.  She comes when I call her up to the front gate of her pasture.  If my husband, however, tried to call her, I'm fairly certain she wouldn't come.  If I, on the other hand, called out "horsie" or "snot-nose" or any other two syllable word to Jaeda using the same tone that I say "Jaeda"  I'm positive she would come.  What do you want to name her?

Here's a good one... My 13 yr old walkaloosa came to me 2 years ago with the name "Storm".  He hates it (but completely deserves the name he is such a brat)! How do I know?  Well, when I call to him in the pasture using that name, he looks up, turns his back to me and refuses to come.  But every time I call him by his preferred name "Buddy-Boy", he canters to me with all flags flyin!  In other cases, if I mess up and call him Storm without fail he gives me the stinkeye and turns his butt toward me.  He truly hates it. So, he is now renamed and the rest of the folk at the farm are trying to remember to use it.  :)  I decided to let him have his way in this, since I was never attached to the old name anyway... :)

That is so funny about your horse not liking his old name. Well that's a good argument right there to change.

I am thinking of re-naming my horse Ginger - which I know isn't very original, but it fits her. It's after Ginger Rogers, who was a gorgeous redhead, oh-so smooth on her feet. Plus I love the spice ginger - it's sweet and tingly at the same time!

Plus, there's the Ginger from "Black Beauty", who was a tough girl with a heart of gold... I like it! :)

Actually your horse kinda resembles Ginger on Black Beauty.  Great movie by the way.  I didn't like my horse's name when I got him.  "Casey", now what kind of name is that?  But it grows on you, I couldn't think of anything better, so husband added Cowboy so that kinda fit, Cowboy Casey.

When I bought my Quarter horse as an 8 year old, I had no idea what his prior barn name was.  He had no problem answering to "Chester" for the next 14 years.   My Icey's name is Logi but a lot of people have trouble with it so his barn name is Bud E. Pony.  He also answers to several nicknames (he's the epitome of "I don't care what you call me, just not late for dinner".)  l1

Ginger is a nice name - go for it!

I've changed all but one of our "purchased" horses simply because their prior barn names didn't match them (I thought).  So:

Chessy became Dolly (QH reg. Ima Bouncing Doll)

Bud became Sonny (Arab reg. Debrason) and

Nikki became Shadow (MFT reg. Sunrise's Cast Iron Shadow)

None of them had any problems coming to their names but we had problems remembering to call them by their new names.  All the rest of my herd, I named myself so we don't have to change any of them - I think the two I sold have both kept their original barn names, too.

I think it's all fine and good to change a ponys' name.  I don't see the big deal really, so long as you feel it better represents the ponys' personality and it makes you feel better, I say go for it.  If you are comfortable with the new name as opposed to the old name, your enthusiasm and happiness will transfer to your pony and result in a positive interaction.  What's the 'from' ' to' name?

Hey Susan, My Sparky is, Cast Iron Sparky WD. I guess they're cousins.....or something. I haven't changed any of mine because they just all seemed to fit. Cinnamon was registered as a sorrel roan when foaled but has turned gray but she's still sweet and spicey.

Yep, me too. It seems to fit. Once she feels confident about something, there doesn't seem to be much she won't try to do. We even tried a bit of 'cow shufflin' this summer and she seemed to take right to it. Walked right in amongst them without any hesitation. We did a trail class a few months ago, cold, no practice other than normal stuff. She went right around until it came to the shredded tarp hanging up. She did the biggest 4 footed squat stop I've ever been on. You know how dogs will lower themselves on their front feet to intice you to play? Thats what she did. Looked it over and was watching the breeze blow it. When the breeze blew it all to one side..... she walked right through. Veerrrry shifty, my girl.

My horse was rescued at the age of 12. His owners had owned him for 7 years but when the wife got sick the husband didnt care for the horses so a neighbor rescued him from being starved to death.

His registered name is "Monty's Chance Bar"...he came with the name "Chance"...besides being too cliche (a rescue named Chance? I think its been done)
I just hate the name. I think he hated the name.
I thought about calling him Monty but he didnt seem stuffy enough for it.

I was mulling around names one day when he was running loose in the arena and I randomly yelled JOOOEEY!! and he ran over! I think he liked the name.

So Joey (or Joseph or Joebaby or.. the nicknames are endless) it is. It gets confusing sometimes as my name is Jody.. but it seems to fit us :D

Oh and btw.. I ALWAYS change a pets name when I get them. They learn their new name quickly no matter what their age and I think its part of the bonding process.

Funny you should mention the name Monty. I recently traded my 4 year old MFT for a gaited Morgan. The lady that took him has renamed him Monty for Monty Hall, 'Let's Make A Deal'.

I was very glad I didnt end up naming Joey Monty. The last barn we were in had an appy named Monty. He was old and stuffy and the name was perfect for him l1
