Thank you all for starting and posting to this thread.  I've always thought I needed to keep a horse's barn name unless it was just hideous.  The buckskin gelding I purchased after the death of my mare last spring, came with the name Buck.  Too common, and I hate calling a horse by a name of something I don't want him to do!!  After 5 months, we got to know him really well and now call him Logan (like Wolverine's real name, not the horse trailer brand).  It fits him perfectly.  I had a personalized halter made for him to solidify his name in my mind.  I still occasionally slip and call him Buck, but he now comes when I call him by his new name.  Ok, he comes no matter what I call him, cuz he likes me!

I know what you mean about Buck!  That's what my boy was called when I got him, and they didn't even have the excuse of color for it!  He was such a peaceful sort that Shiloh (meaning God's peace, or something close to it) suited him well.  And he doesn't buck!

I changed my poor horse's name too.  I just got him  about 2 months ago.  His original name was Nelson, then the ppl that I got him from named him Harley and I HATED it!

Plust he was really BAD when he was Harley... in fact when he relapses we say that he has slid back to his Harley ways l1

I tried quite a few names before we settled with ONYX.....my mom said that we should've named him "MAJOR" since our last name is PAYNE...l1 had I not already had a fit at the barn about everyone calling him ONYX I might've changed it to Major!

Just joined this forum... on this subject, is it normal to change out the name of the farm the horse is from, if that farm name is in the horses's registered name? I've been debating this for a while... I like the rest of his name.

I think we're all referring to the horse's nickname or barn name, not his registered name.   I probably wouldn't change a horse's registered name, unless there was a really good reason to (like they practice soring or some other abomination).

I just heard from the gal who I bought my horse Logan (formerly Buck) from.  She actually LOVED the new name I gave him.   I'm glad she likes it too.  :D

We just acquired a colt whose registered name is "SCR Hair Raiser".  His dam's name is "Hair Spray".    We decided to call him "Spike".  What do ya'll think?

Haha!!  That's a good one too.  Or FauxHawk!   Nah, too close to Hawk, one of our other horses.

OMGosh . . .when I purchased Dillon (avatar) his registered name was Spike!  It didn't fit Dillon but given your baby's dam's name I think it's cute :D

My Registered Paints name is Tom Thumbs Mudeye.  What kind of name is that.::) I wanted to change it on his papers, it was gonna be around 125.00 to change it legally.  So Tom Thumbs Mudeye it is.  Someone had a reason for naming him it, so I guess they liked it.  I call him Mudeye.

I think that's a cool (registered) name!  But I'd probably pick a new barn name that fits him better.
