Jim, I thank you for the horses!  The SPCA or an equine rescue group might be of more help.   There has got to be someone out there that cares besides you.  Is  animal control the same as the Humane Society?  I know here in NC The Humane Society steps in  then the appropriate rescue group takes over.   Google a rescue group near you, it may possibly solve the problem.

You have  been wonderful to look out for these helpless horses.  It has been horribly hot here, I can only imagine what it must be like there..........and with no water ........unless you risk a beating or worse!  These people have to be stopped...makes me so mad!  i wish I could help.

I thought about writing the situation on the CHANNEL 9 NEWS' website.  At the very least, they would probably call or write Animal Control a letter which may spur them to check on it more rather than be labeled as doing nothing on TV.  I wished a judge or somebody could make people like this sit out in the sun all day long with nothing to drink.

You should contact your local news stations!  Someone will surely jump on it!  Good thinking!  You might even want to contact an animal rights group or a horse rescue organization.  Those people can be fanatical, but might help out to get something done.

Hello Jim.  Has this situation been rectified?  If not, I can possibly help you.

Jim,

you have my sympathies. Not only do I live in Eustis, but I also have an awful neighbor that starves his animals- and I have found animal control to be useless,- useless in Eustis.

Our neighbors are animal collectors, they get more and more but don't take care what they already have. One horse is a walking skelleton, the other is their teenage daughter's horse and all his ribs are sticking out. Her horse is only 5 and the sweetest, kindest horse. I talked to her about selling him, because I have never seen her wash or groom or do anything with her horse. But she says she likes having a horse.

They do get vetted, hooves trimmed, but just not fed well. Because they have too many animals.

Animal Control is useless. My neighbor has complained to me that someone keeps calling animal control, and they are tired of coming out because his horses look "great". They look so great that a perfect stranger came to my house the other day and asked if I knew why my neighbor's didn't take care of their horses.

I don't know how anyone could describe a horse looking great, when all his hipbones, ribs, spine are sticking out. My neighbor now says it has a thyroid condition, so I wanted to ask if all the animals had bad thyroids over there.

We have a wire fence seperating our properties, so when we feed our horses their nice grain, supplements, fresh T&A hay, we have all their animals lined up along the fence looking depressed and sad.

In winter we do blanket our horses and feed hot mash at 11pm- we look at their pitiful animals without a shelter and end up feeding them too. It breaks our hearts to have them stand there and look at us..they can't possibly understand WHY they don't get the same food and treatment.

I hope you have resolved your situation, just don't count on Animal Control. Good Luck!

Mountain Horse:  I also would like to know the status of this situation, but you have to understand the politics revolving around animal control.  I'm not saying it's right or that I agree with it, but it is what it is.  I would like to help and give perhaps some names and suggestions, but only if I know more about the situation.

My baby Stroker contracted laminitis on June 8th 2009 and is a Spotted Saddle Horse.  You can see his ribs. He is by NO MEANS starved to death NOR is he neglected, but by comparison to the rest of the ponies at the barn, he is 'skinny minny'.  I've always liked my horses a little on the lean side which means you can probably see a couple of their ribs.  I am sure you are referring to true neglect however, but animal control isn't what most folks think it is.  I know.  I did it.

Hey Tina from Eustis and MountainHorse,

I'm sorry, but I was trying to keep from logging on and posting on the board anymore.  I hate to leave anybody hanging on this situation especially when somebody may be able to help.   Here's an update since my last:

I hadn't been going on their property to check the troughs for a couple of weeks since animal control would not come back out the previous time I had called when the troughs were dry.  I hadn't seen the people haul any in and as of right now the property still has no electric.  It's been off for a good month now.  I climbed the fence and checked the troughs Wednesday before last (a week and a half ago) and the troughs were still bone dry.  Not a trace of moisture.  I was so upset I went on the web and reported the situation to Action 9 News.  They called the next day and the lady on the phone seemed fairly non-interested and was like we need the exact address of animal control, bla, bla, bla and so I got aggrevated and then called the Humane Society and told them about the last 3 months.  They said they were aware of the case and would try to get an officer back out there.  A couple of hours later I got a call from the Officer Holland mentioned in previous posts.  They were at the property and wanted to know if I could help them get water to the horses.  I went out back and gathered all my watering hoses and dragged about 600 feet of hoses from my barn across my 5 acres and over the fence and across their property to their corrals.  There were 2 wildlife officers there in 2 different trucks.  We worked and filled up their troughs and the officer told me she had just closed the case the week before.  I jacked her up a bit for closing the case when I was still calling in complaints that the horses had absolutely no water.  She was telling me that the owner of the horses didn't live there and didn't know they were being neglected.  I told her that 2 of those horses have been there for years and the owners were living on property with them the whole time.  Low and behold the guy that has been threatening me for turning them in pulls in with a trough of water in the bed of his truck.  He said they were living with a relative just down the same road and I think he saw the 2 animal control trucks come by and grabbed a tank and filled it up and rushed over there knowing his ass was in trouble.  She asked if he was the owner of the horses and he said yes and I told her that this was the same guy that was living there before the trailor was removed and was the same guy that had been threatening me from turning them in and he then claimed that he had just filled these troughs up 2 days earlier.  I called him a bald face liar and told him I had been checking the troughs and they hadn't been filled for weeks.  The officer jacked him around pretty good and told her he had been trying to have me arrested for coming onto the property, but the sheriff said he couldn't arrest me unless the sheriff and I were on the property at the same time.  I also informed him that he would also need to be the owner of the property or at least live on the property and plus the property is not posted.  The officer told him the only reason I was there then was because she had asked me to help her get water to the horses.  When the troughs were full I pulled my hoses back over the fence and left it.

This last Wednesday (a week later) I hadn't seen the owners of the property over there except for a couple of minutes at a time so I know they still are not bringing in water so I climbed over and checked the troughs again and found 1 to have about an inch of water in the bottom and the other was about 1/3 the way full, but stale.

I came in and found Lake County animal services page on the web and filled out another complaint and asked for an officer to come out yet again.  A few hours later the guy, his wife/girlfriend and the mother of the girl (which I hadn't seen for a year) all came by with water, feed, mowed part of the yard.

While the officers were there the week before she had noticed that the wire fence right next to one of the shelters was sagged down until a horse could really step over it and get out.  She kind of stretched it back up, but it really needs to be replace or at the very least stretched and retacked so it willl stay up.  Anyway, the 2 horses in that pasture have gotten out 3 times this last week.  The first time their driveway gate was left open.  I was so hoping they would get out and down the dirt road and somebody would spot them and call animal control out for that.  The grey qh was out again this morning in their back yard.  I think he's still there.

Anyway, they've been caught at least 2 more times in the last 2 weeks with no water and they still have their horses there.  I don't know how much it takes, but I do know that taking in more horses is the last thing the county wants or needs.

Tina,

Where are you located in Eustis?  I'm just off Lake Seneca Road between 44 and 44A just East of Eustis just past CR439.

Jim

Hi Jim,

I am the one that lives in Eustis. I'm one mile up the road from you.:) (off 439)

Sorry the situation is the same. It's pretty unbelievable. I know Lake County Animal services confiscates horses all the time, I would have to think there are some connections here that keeps them from doing something about it. Very baffling.

Off topic, we have a lady on our street that brings in fill to her wetlands, moves her natural stream, cuts trees illegally, stops up the water flow, and the EPA, Water Authorities, etc have all been out dozens of times, but since she is well connected she can do whatever she wants. Must be a Lake County thing.s4

Tina,

I ride on the trails just behind "Wondering Ponds" that was started on 44 that go down to 439 and 44 intersection.  If you bear off Lake Seneca Rd at the 90 degree curve and go up to the top of the hill and make a right on Stagecoach Trl and go down to the end and make a right on Foothill Lane.  It goes down the hill into a cul de sac and I own the property on the left side of the cul de sac.  23146 Foothill Ln.  We'll have to hook up and go riding sometime soon.  Don't the street names even sound cool!  Stagecoach Trail, Foothill Lane, Yellowstone.  I love it out here!!!!!!!!!!

Jim
