I'm on the gulf coast and after the recent storm we have tons and tons of mosquito's. I have tried several sprays and none seem to be working. Even the spray I normally use for us is not working. I can't even walk in the yard without being swarmed. So what has worked best for you? I hate buying crap that doesn't work. Thanks!

I am unfortunately of a 'sweet' taste that no bugs can resist... if there's one within 500 yards it will find and chew me even when others are not targets.  For years, I have tried every repellent on the market, including the vile Deet products.  They work, but smell so nasty that I couldn't stand myself!

Then I found Burt's Bees Insect Repellent, with cedar, peppermint and citronella oils... it works great even against biting flies... is all natural and smells pleasant.  I never go anywhere without it!  :)

Stacey, maybe we're neighbors :D

On the really bad days, I use "Repel" (Walmart, sport department). It has a high % of "deet" in it, which is the only thing that seems to work. On those days, I also use it on the horses.

I always wondered if I could you "human" products on my animals. It was so bad the other day I sprayed my Off on the goat. I ended up putting him on the porch to save him from being swarmed. The horse spray I bought wasn't working. I just hate going through bottle after bottle to find what works. I know years ago I had so good stuff but I can't remember what it was. The farm store was closed and the spray I got was at Wal Mart. It's an aerosol and I think it's been around a long time because it reminds me of horse camp when I was 12. That was almost 30 years ago, that sounds so old! I'm going back to the store today and going to try the stuff in the bright orange bottle, can't remember the name but I know I've used it before. Also anyone try the spot on stuff? I always wondered if it works and it seems so easy.

I use human stuff on my horses, and I use their stuff on me :D

In my area, most of the time the biting flies are the biggest problem. For that, I mainly use 2 products: Bronco Gold on its own, and Tri-Tec mixed with citronella oil. Both do a reasonable job on the "normal" mosquito population.

Since Ike hit us, every heavy rain storm has us just covered in mosquitos and the above products on their own just don't cut it. So, when I turn them out I use (human) Repel - a quick spray on the neck, back, belly.

The spot-on I found working on the flies, not mosquitos. Human products such as Deep Woods, Off, Skin-so-soft don't have enough of the working stuff to cut your way through the clouds of mosquitos.

Also, I don't know if in your area you have the drain ditches that are common in my county (Jefferson). If they are, what helps a lot is a product called "Mosquito Torpedos" (I get them at Walmart, Garden Department). As soon as I get standing water in the ditches, I throw one of those torpedos in there - cuts down on the breeding, and won't harm the horses if they were to drink the water.

Thanks so much. I'm in Brazoria county and we live near the Chocolate Bayou. I was wondering if there was something I could put in the pond in the pasture that wouldn't hurt the horses. I'm going to Alvin today so I'll stop at Wal Mart. I have to spray myself every time I go out and I'm still getting eaten alive. The only ones not bothered are the chickens, they eat them. I can't believe I'm wishing for the cold!

Hey,

I use original formula Bounce dryer sheets.  Rubbem' all over, and neither me or my horse get chewed.  It doesn't work for everyone, but here in the west, it's gnat's that do the most damage, creating sweet itch.  That's a whole other thread, but this is just an idea.  Keep the suggestions going, and ride.

I spent a fortune on bug spray last year, and this year, I'm usin' bounce.

so far, so good.

The very best product out of many that were tested was the original Wipe. I believe this is made by Farnam. Be sure you get the original, they also make a spray but it is not as good. The original comes in a jug and it is oil based. Not good for using when showing but great for everything else.

Thanks Camanae for telling us about Bounce.  Never thought of that before.  We go to one horse camp that is mostly gnats, they drive a person crazy.  I use Bounce in the dryer so will have it on hand.

I also believe in org. Wipe.  I have found that is the only thing that keeps the deer flies off my horses.  I have used it since I was a kid, om some 35 years ago :? For a quick fix I also like the concentrated Repel X.  We don't seem to have too much trouble with misquotes yet.  My husband will spray his horse with OFF.

Yup me too. Off works to keep skeeters off. Repel-X works good for gnats. I use that on my hat to keep gnats off me.

Bounce also works. Also the wipe on Cutter towelettes work good too.

Thanks for the Bound tip! Couldn't find the original scent, though, so chose 'linen', hoping it will work.

We have a lot of mosquitoes here, too; our barn sits next to a woods/wetlands, so any time after a big rain, they are out in force. I rely on larvicide this time of year. "Mosquito Dunks" I think they're called, but I buy it online in bulk for a much better price. Also really appreciate those barn swallows.....

For flies, the "Horse Pal" trap does a great job, specifically designed for those nasty deer flies and horse flies; I move it around from time to time. Also, last year I put out the fly predator packages during the warm months. Wowee! For the first time in this old lady's memory, we had no bot eggs on the horses!!

Hey,

Let us know if the linen scent works.

I have both fly traps, fly predators, repellent holders to hang from their favorite sluffing spots.   We live along Kanab Creek where lions tend to bury dead things that grow very healthy flies.

Let us know what you arm yourself with, I just love new ideas, and am always open to new things as the things that bite will be around for the season.

Welcome to the war against things that bite.

I had heard that DEET products should not be used on animals.  I googled the question and the sites that came up were pretty consistant that it should not be used on any animal.

This is from the website http://en.allexperts.com/q/Horses-702/DEET-Mosquito-Control.htm

Question
Good Morning....
Having a very wet summer here in NYS, there are now multitudes of mosquitoes, that are stressing my daughter's horses. Is the commercial mosquito repellants, containing DEET safe to use on the horses ?
Many thanks....

Answer
Deet is NOT to be used on ANY animals, including horses. Some animals are very sensitive to the product, and it can cause some serious side effects. When applied to the skin, Deet can be absorbed, or ingested by horses.

It becomes very toxic to the brain and nervous system, and can cause tremors, weakness, paralysis, emotional / behavior changes, seizures, and death on rare occasions.

If you're lucky, all your horse will suffer is a skin rash or blisters.

In my opinion...the hassle is just NOT worth it. Try a good wipe-on/rub-on fly spray, and feed apple cider vinegar along with your horse's feed. They sweat the vinegar out and it becomes a natural fly spray. If you have anymore questions, please let me know.

Just in the for what it is worth department.

Carol

WOW! I spray Deet on my horses! We have chiggers here (red bugs). Nasty, nasty things. The deet is the only thing that keeps them off the legs besides what we used to do as kids- dust ourselves with sulpher. Anyone have any ideas for chiggers? I too use the bounce for the gnats, but don't have much of a problem with those - I scoop poop every day and only have one horse here, so not many piles. I go out once a day with a can of flying insect killer and spray the poops. Mass killing of gnats. REALLY FUN. Keeps the population down surprisingly well. Deer flies and the big black vampire flies are the big things here. Nothing seems to help as much as I'd like...

I was told if you have things in storage, you can put bounce in with whatever and around the area its stored and it will keep bugs and mice away.

Hey,

This is a wacky thread, but new ideas are always welcome.  Bug wars, it is a work in progress that goes...and goes..til it snows.

I really wonder about the chiggers too.  Bad, bad case last year, and itch...whew.  Nearly drove me crazy.  Anyone have anything for chiggers?
