For those of you that have white horses (or some white on your horses). What is the best way you have found to keep your horses white and sparkling?

In the laundry section look for a small blue bottle "Mrs Wrights Blueing" It is used to whiten clothes..... Mix a little in a bucket of water and use it to wash white horses, socks and manes. Works really well and it's CHEAP !!!! BE careful not to use too much though, too much will leave your horse slightly blue for a couple of days

I also use "Mrs Wrights Blueing" on my white horse. It works so well that on a sunny day it sort of hurts your eyes to look at my horse. I've been lazy lately and my girl looks like a palomino right now. l1

Oh boy something I have not tried, my mares tail is urine stained and I am having a hard time getting it white again, will be going to the store to try this, hope it works, I was looking at a photo of her the other day and her tail was sparkling white and now it is yellow and that really bothers me.

Hi, I had a palomino mare and I read that oxy-clean worked well. I used a scoop in a bucket of water on the mare's stained tail. I just got as much tail in the bucket as possible and swooshed it around a little bit and dumped the water out and it looked like dirty mop water. I mixed a second bucket and done it again and then rinsed thoroughly. Her tail looked better than it ever had. I have never used the blueing. It may even do better, but the oxy-clean did a pretty good job. Jim

Yes have already tried that one to, Jim. The last one I tried this past wednesday was to wash her tail in povidone-iodine, but I read not to leave it on to long or it could stain the tail, but it seemed to break off more of the urine staining than anything else so far, I think I am at the point were I am going to have to do something about every other day to brighten it up, but its finally getting cold around here not sure I wann be out playing in the water.

I have just about gave up keeping my "lots of white" horse clean. As I mentioned on another post I took the vacume cleaner to him and that helped. He has a white butt that always has embarrassing mature stains. His tail is very full and long and it also has stains. I hate to keep spraying him off before going on a ride, (we usually trailer somewhere or camp) because the weather is getting cold. I'm thinking, oh boy, you don't mind rolling around and getting dirty, I don't mine spraying you with cold water. I have oxy stuff at home, might give that a try.

The cowboy magic green spot remover has done wonders for my all white mare. After spraying it on the discolored spot, you can wipe the stain off. Also, it helps repel new stains. For the main and tail, every purple/blue tinted shampoo I've used has done a great job (it may just take 2 or 3 washes if it's a real mess). Also, applying the cowboy magic shine product after washing the main and tail helps prevent new stains (and knots). I think I should be getting some kind of comission from them. l1 I really do love those products, though.

I can not find the Mrs Wrights blueing anywhere but I did find that the Oxy people have a new laundry detergent additive that is a liquid. I couldn't believe how well it worked. Here we have red dirt (rust) that stains everything so I am very glad I found this product. Tara

Hey, After much experimentation over the years. I use tide. I know, sounds too easy, but here I have coral pink sand everywhere, and my white horse....is a pink gelding. Tide on the pink tail, wash, and condition afterwards. It is the least expensive thing I have found that will make the pink tail go away. Cowboy magic works too, but leaves a residue that helps the dirt come back and can get expensive over time. Don't mock my tide till you try it. That will mean you are on my tide.... which tide are you on? Yeah, I'm a goof ball with a white horse in the high deserts where red sand is everywhere.

I will give some of these a shot, but I have had particular luck using a paste-like shampoo that I picked up at the local farm store that is supposed to be used for washing sheep's wool prior to showing them. I get a wet sponge and work it into the mane/tail, while leaving the rest of the horse dry. Washing his mane and tail as a part of regular washing is leaving him wet too long. It is a lot of work, but it is the ONLY thing I've used (including oxyclean, blueing, etc.) that got his forelock and mane clean all the way to the roots....then again...it is a serious mane and he has some serious shag... Then, the most important thing for getting his body clean is to make sure and get as much of the dirt off as possible while he is dry. I like the vacuum idea, and I have done that from time to time. After that, any of the "purple" type shampoos out there work pretty well on the body. The once place that is never as clean as I want it are the dirt rings around/under his eyes...it is too tough to get that close to them! Also Cowboy Magic green spot remove in a pinch....works wonders on those false "green pinto" spots on the rear end. One of his cleaner moments: ![]()

Hey, Wow, fabulous white. I just have to laugh because when my horse gets a bath, so do I, we both smell like wet horse when we're done. And it lasts exactly up to the moment he rolls over. Really, he's more of a long legged pig, pure joy, snorting and moaning, yikes. I am really going to try just doing the tail and mane. That's a great idea, and another one just for kicks and giggles, and it may be on here somewhere already...but a nylon stocking can be attached over the tail and it will stay clean longer, and sometimes stays on long enough to keep his tail white, but he isn't very impressed with it. It takes me 2 hours to get him white for a parade. How long does it take you to white out the icky on yours?

I'll spend about 90 minutes doing just his obnoxious mane and tail with the sheep shampoo paste, followed by about 30 minutes to get the dirt off as best I can before I get him wet, and finally about another 45 minutes shampooing his body...usually 2:15 to 2:30... That yellow dunn stallion in the picture above is always the same color as the dirt...his bath takes 15 minutes... ~Nick

Yeah, But white is highly visible, and your icey is great. Are your hands pruny when you get done? You know, the fingertips that look like little dried up prunes...mine are l1 Gomer is white, though his skin under the white is black so technically, he's really a grey, around his ankles and muzzle, the white all but glows when he's clean. Appreciate your input, sounds like you are also for the horse. Take lots of pictures when he's white...so you can prove it can be done... s3

I will get some pictures of his next bath... I usually wear the elbow-high Mr. Clean rubber gloves when I bathe him to avoid the "prune fingers." ~Nick

How often does he do the shimmy shake? I'd need a scuba suit to avoid an absolutely joyful bath, it's hot out here, bath time for the horses is anticipated by everything equine at our place.

The shimmy shake will happen several times per bath. Bathing the Zipster is typically done either in full rain gear or swim trunks and muck boots! ;)
