Ive had mares, and I prefer geldings.
Mares can be moody, whereas the geldings I have had are usually steady in their temperment.

I'm with you.  I'll take a gelding any day over a "witchy" mare!  All the geldings I've had have been very even tempered, but ever since a mare tried every way she knew how to kill me, I've only adopted geldings.

I think mares have more of a personality, but I like a"steady eddy" kind of horse, which is usually a gelding.

I've delt with good and bad of all sexes.  But I've had fewer issues with my all gelding herd.  Mares in and of themselves are not the problem.  It's when the boys start fighting over them that we have problems!  I believe the old saying goes, You can tell a gelding, ask a mare and discuss it with a stallion!  Jen

Since I have 4 mares ,I ride mares 21 days out of the month anyway lol. but My one gelding is in the process of being ridden out and The only problem I have with him is he is a little lazy. Must be a gender thing. My wife says I'm lazt unless it has to do with riding a horse, selective laziness  right? hahhahhaha

It is said that mare have more heart once you have there trust . And will go the extra mile for you . But it also said that there trust is hearder to attain . But i do know that nothing can mess up a good heard of gelding like a mare . Another one of those gender thing that rick speaks of . I have gelding and wouldnt mix them with mares . My wife's first horse was a mare and you would never know it but i have been around some very "mareish" mares and you couldnt give me them . I also have a friend who breeds spotted horses and she says the best rideing horses are her pregnant mares . So maybe then need to be keepted barefoot and pregnant lol .

only the horses  Chris, Finally got my kids out of the house. barefoot is ok but not the P -word I'm too old.

This is kinda funny and happened yesterday- Boots 4yr old mare and RainMan 3yr old gelding are full brother and sister, Boots was stanging by me getting a little scratching time and Rain was about 100 feet away when the newest mare in my heard squeeled and went to kick him, Boots whirled away from me and went at a full run and chased the other mare away from Rain, then as she was coming back over to me the expression on her face was like  What did you think of that I'll teach her to mess with my little brother. I laughed til my sides hurt.

Hey,

I gotta tell you that for the most part, geldings are more predictable and better for beginners.  On the other hand, in any contest of wills, a mare will have more heart than a gelding.  G's do tend to be lazier, and less "sexy".  If all you do is ride, ride a gelding, if you want babies (I do not) get a mare and be an attentive rider.  Make sure if your mare is moody, to put a ribbon on her tail, it means she could be a kicker (just flirting) and to beware.

I love my steady boys but have ridden mares that are awesome as well.  They just have moody days when they will back up to anything, stumps, bushes, rocks, little hussies b1 .

I do love to ride'em all,

Camanae, Handlebar D Ranch

I can answer for both myself and my mom.

I'm a gelding girl all the way.  They tend to be more playful and have more quirks...although sometimes those quirks are annoying but anyway.  They do seem to be steadier as a rule but we all know how for every rule there's a million exceptions.

My mom on the other hand prefers her mares (out of 18 horses she has only one stallion and one gelding l1).  She feels they are more responsive and overall sweeter.  Plus she needs them for her breeding program. I would have to agree that's true...especially when they are getting close to foaling.1l

I prefer mares myself. I know what it's like to get moody and grumpy at certain times so I don't pay much attention to it when Dancer does. I enjoy mares because you always have the option of raising a baby if you want to. They seem to give more of themselves and get closer to me too. The only" mareish" problem I seem to have with Dancer is she is very jealous and posessive of me! If I pet another horse and she is around she will shove the other horse away and place herself between me and the other horse. She will even shove her head between me and my husband if we happen to hug one another when around her. She has never been the alpha mare when with other horses. She is usually the wimp that gets kicked and picked on. I have been working with her on this issue and now when she gets pushy I say "NO NOSE!" and she will take a step back. I'm now training Mystery to be respectful of our space as well since he will probally remain a stud and I want him to be as safe as possible to be around.          Retta

I  prefer geldings. There the only gender ive ever owned. Ive ridden some awesome mares though.  :) Only have ridden one stallion and he was quite a challange. Iv known some extreemly nice stallions though . I wouldnt want one though. I   just want to ride not breed horses and so a gelding fits the bill.

I always thought i would have a gelding, actually preferred them before getting cricket.  While searching for my first horse I was looking for a 10- 12 year old gelding. I ended up with a 3 year old mare. How'd that happen? I love her so much! When she is in season (or heat or what ever it is called for a horse) I don't really see a big change in her attitude but wow- the boys we ride with sure do act silly! What can I expect though- she's one hot mama!

Chris- ohh- if anyone jumped on my back while i was pregnant i prob would've disemboweled them!! hormones are a scary thing- thank God our horses are so forgiving!

I've only ever dealt with geldings...so I'm spoiled.  At my age, I'm all for NO excitement...just steady performance.  I've seen friends deal with their mares and I'd just as soon avoid the hassle.  I ride for fun, not to prove anything.  We won't even talk about studs...  :?    I don't breed, I just ride, so why would I need anything OTHER than a gelding?  I tell McGruff...and 95% of the time he does it....the other 5?...well we discuss it and sometimes he wins and sometimes I let him do it his way! ROLF.  Actually, I win most of the time.  Enough so that he knows I'm the boss!!

A lot depends upon how determined he is to have his way!  LOL  He's got a neck like a 15 year old stud and he's strong as a tank.  No buck, no rear, just steady determination.  Only one time was his way totally wrong...and then he was a total gentleman, backed up nicely, admitted his mistake and we did it my way.  I swear to God he was embarassed!!   I'll never be a great horsewoman, but I'm horsewoman enough for my gelding.... LOL   I'll leave the studs and mares for you younger, more ambitious folks!   w2

Pat

I'll take my mares, thank you. :) I've never been scared, bucked off, left broken, kicked, bitten, left unconcious, reared up on,run over or hurt in general by any of my mares.  Wish I could say that about the geldings I've owned :((with the exception of one paint gelding).

I prefer to ride a stud - there's no competing with the spirit and willingness. My stallion has been trained to ignore the mares we encounter (due to lots of shows!), and he is a real joy to ride.

hey y'all, im new to the gaits of gold community, well my mother and I.  Anyways we both prefer geldings, i feel they are my bold and once you gain authority they make great trail companions, mares can have a real attitude when its that time, I disagree with the people who think that mares have more of a personality.  I think any horse can have an outgoing and fun personality.
