Maybe that's it.  I hope so.

I just looked up how long I've owned my gelding and it's only been 5 months so... but he definately adores my son.  It's funny actually because it's so obvious!  I love the big guy, wish he'd warm up to me!

Well there is that connection that a horse will make with one person and not the other.  I know I went through several to find the right ones for my kids.   I just hate to do that for myself, I have a hard time letting go.  I only have room for one horse now, so that limits me for sure.

This is my granddaughter on Drifter last summer (before I got the ICB)!

I love my stallion, I've ridden geldings mostly and liked them better that is until I bought my stud DomEnus!!! I think I would like to only ride studs from now on. He just seems to be so much more willing and well.. like he talks to me about things befor so I know when I need to take care or comfort him. The mares I have ridden were too moody for me, way too much attitude. Then again I think diffrent ppl need diffrent things. I had a 1/2 Standardbred and 1/2 QH and twice he bucked and threw me off, knocked the wind out of me and broke my ribs, TWICE in 2 months my ribs still hurt! Then I sold him and the 2 little girls who eventually ended up with him 9 and 11 ride him bareback with a halter and goes everywhere anytime! So it just goes to show you it's a good thing there is such a thing as variety.

I think it goes beyond the sexes.  For sure it's an individual thing, but I have had two mares, one when I was about 11 years old and now another when I am 54.  No horses in between.

I love my Rocky Mtn. Mare.  She just turned four and I have been trail riding on her and taking her out for walks in the park for a year now with no problems.  She loves to go and she's very willing to please.  Does she test me?  You betcha, but she loves my attention too.  She shows me where she wants to be scratched with her nose, if I haven't quite got the right spot.  She always comes in from outside when I come to her stall door.  She has tons of personality and I like that.

I've ridden plenty of geldings owned by others and they can be sweet, but are just kind of boring.  There's a Percheron gelding where my horse is boarded that seeks out attention, other than that the other boys just aren't as present when you are around them.

I think some of this attitude stuff can be genetic not sex oriented.  I've gone trail riding next to older geldings that get goofy at the sound of bushes rustling and my mare just keeps on going, doesn't even flinch.

Here's a picture of my sister playing with Reba when she was two.

Oops, that didn't work.  I guess the picture file was too big.  Anyway Reba is rearranging all the cones lined up in the arena.  She likes to have something in her mouth all the time, so she plays with whatever she can get her mouth on.

Hi gang!  I love my mare saddlebred, even though she is stubborn and opinionated, she is also sweet and loving. Unlike one of our geldings, she always comes to see us at the gate or in her stall. She loves to be scratched, rubbed, stands still for any brushing. Now that we are getting the hang of proper riding she is working very hard with me. But, for three years she took me out on trails and learned alot of new things with a half-scared and totally stupid rider on her back, and I'm convinced she just loves people so much.  BUT, she is a hussy in season. We have two geldings, and one of them, the big sweet TB, is in  love with her. She shows and spews, and cries, its crazy!  My trainer said we should keep them out of the same poasture or she'll be in heat all summer. This is true, because even tho she was in her own pasture near them last year, she stayed in heat most  of the time. Still, she will go out on trail with either of them without much trouble. I have ridden both of the boys...Skylar is so big he sometimes scares me and Woody is unpredictable, but June is smooth as glass to ride.

geldings.  THey don't go in heat like mares and don't have hormones like stallions.

I prefer geldings. I have enough estrogen for both of us.
