This came up on another thread and made me wonder how long most of us have been riding. I started at the age of two and rode off and on mostly when I could steal a ride from friends on their horses. I bought my own horse about 8 years ago and became serious about becoming a better rider.

I was introduced to my first horse almost 17yrs ago and married her owner because I love her so much. Have had horses ever since. QH, Appys, Paints, TWH (didn't even know what TWH was back then). Taylor is my first "mine and only mine" horse-beloved and fun. Still learning to ride and having a ball doing it.

I've been riding for 34yrs. My first horse was 1/2 QH & 1/2 Morgan and lived to be 34 yrs.old, just lost him 3 yrs. ago. My husband had to agree to let me keep him if we got married, that was 26yrs. ago.We now have a 5yo. QH, a 3yo. SSH and a yearling SSH.Husband still doesn't ride" yet." There's still hope, the 3yo. he says is his, we'll see come spring when we get him broke!!! I think it would be wonderful to be able to share that bond with him.

Started with english riding lessons at age seven so ive been riding a looooooong time. Fifty two years. Unreal. Starting at age eight i would take my allowance and bicycle out to the local riding stable. The owner let me ride a very nice horse he had that he didnt rent out often. It wasnt standing saddled waiting for riders like the other horses. So i got to groom him, saddle him and it was okay if i went to the woods and rode for more than an hour. Then i got to pull his saddle and cool him out and groom him again and put him away. I could pretend he was my very own horse. Although i didnt own a horse til my twenties, i always figured out a way to ride - cleaning stalls for someone or leasing a horse or whatever it took. People used to say all little girls love horses but most outgrow it when they hit their teens and discover BOYS. But my fascination with horses never waned. Boys turned my head, but horses have been my life. My ex-husband soon came to notice i spent more time in the barn than the kitchen. Like who died and made me Betty Crocker ?

I enjoy everything about my horses! Just watching them munch on hay is theraputic for me. I LOVE having them home, just going out to brush a mane any time of the day is a dream come true!

I've been riding for 26 years. I had to wait to buy my own horse as my parents were convinced I would be killed by such large animals and figured I would outgrow the ''bug''. I promptly bought a horse with my very first paycheck!!!! I started out trail riding, to exercising Thoroughbred Racehorses, than breeding and showing Arabian and Half-Arabians to now enjoying and breeding Tenessee Walking Horses and Spotted Saddlehorses. I have also a love for Saddlebreds and am looking out for a nice palomino Saddlebred filly to cross on my Spotted Saddle Horse Stallion. I have a 18 year old Saddlebred/Tennessee Walker cross that was my favorite riding horse of all time, meaner than snot, but a ride to die for! Literally!!!! ;)

My dad had me on a horse before I would walk literally! I had my own pony by the time I was 3 and at 4 would go by myself to round up the milk cow in the morning. Horse have been a huge part of my life and although the past 12 years (has it been that long?) I haven't gotten to have them with my they are still my biggest love (except my family) and I have a wonderful father who also loves them and has been keeping them for me all this time. Daylene

I didn't start riding until I was 38!!! I did it as a part of my Master's program in Psychology. We had to do something we never did and that would be a challenge. Trust me...at 38 it was a huge challenge. Got my first horse a year later...a half blind totally nuts t-bred, traded for a half dead TWH/Saddlebred, retired her at 35 after riding her until she was 32, got a gorgeous but unhappy quarter horse who is now happily retired at the farm at the age of 28 and now I have my lovely little Annie...who dragged my jacket into the stall today and tossed it around, stepped on it, picked it back up and stood there with it in her mouth. Cute little Annie1l

Just got my first horse at the age of 47. Did a lot of reading up on the best trail horse. Discovered spotted saddle horse Miss Kitty, age 6, totally broke trail horse who would be great for beginner. Found out after buying her she's green broke and had been a pasture horse up until last summer when she was bought at auction and trained for 6 months then sold to me. Has been a challenge but after finding a young trainer who teaches Clint Anderson ways who strongly believes in ground work first, it has made a huge difference. I'm loving every minute and just love going to the barn to groom or just watch her eat hay. You gotta make those life long dreams come true.

I guess I'm classic, took lessons as a child; mucked stalls in return for rides as a teenager; beg, borrowed and stole rides whenever I could through adulthood and then got my own 6 years ago. Collective riding years, about 13.

I started riding when I was eight. Every weekend in the summer, one of the parents would round up all the kids on the street and take us to a pony farm. For two hours we could ride all over their small acreage on shetland ponies. Those were the most stubborn critters, but if you fell off..you didn't have far to go. I think people are too afraid of being sued these days for that kind of fun. It's too bad. I really loved it.

I just don't know whow to answer this one, since I have been on/off w/ horses most of my Life, even thought they have always been alive in my heart... I guess it started my first pony ride at 4 at a fair in Houston, TX. I was the kid that would walk anywhere to hang w/ people's horses in the pasture or woods. It was easy to buy me gifts, anything horse related would thrill me, esp. non-fiction books. Started riding at rent-a-mount stables at about 9 every other weekend...had to save my allowance. My mom would haul us off & leave us for hours. It was Heaven to me & my 2 horsey friends. Never a lesson, per se, other than what the horses taught me. I had already practiced for hours on the kitchen chair, using the rungs of the chair legs as my stirrups. I already had the rhythum (SP...) rooted into my being, so I could post that chair & sit the canter. I was the kid out there "playing horses", snatching a weed to whip as my tail, trotting & cantering around all collected up. I'd set up jumps & set ?my horse" up for the perfect approach ^ execution over that thing. (I am sure I was quite the sight! Come to think of it, I am the only daughter of 5 that has never had any knee problems...) Anyway, I was about 14 1/2 when I got my first beautiful buckskin QH mare. I think it was bought as bribe to help me be "good", but she became my source of transportation & escape. I rode that horse everywhere, for hours at a time. Just had to be back by suppertime. Once I left home, I was in, out, near & around horses a lot, but did not have another for a few years. Then it was a donkey jack that I rode all over the countryside, bareback, halter w/ 5-7 dogs in tow. I guess about 20 years passed...schooling, career, marriages, etc. Moved back to GA & have been keeping horses at my home again for I think 6 years now. Started w/ the pony mule, the the SSH mare, then the foundered PF gelding, and lastly the walky-gawky ugly TWH. I finally bought a used 4Beat saddle, then came back to the GOG website, joined the MB & the rest can be found here in archivial history... So, I am still playing horses & having the times of my Life. (At least now, I have some guidance!! Thanks, Y'all!) Well, I still don't know how to fill in to vote...

I'd set up jumps & set ?my horse" up for the perfect approach ^ execution over that thing. (I am sure I was quite the sight! You sound a lot like me!!! I used to play horses at school in grade 6-7 and have most of the kids in my class joining me. We would scream our "Warning - Come follow me neighs", "nickers of friendliness" and set up jumps around the school yard out of sticks and brush. We had the time of our lives and to this day I still use my "horse sounds" and "body language" to talk to my horses. I give welcoming nickers and whinnys, I sigh and blow out louder with my nose when content, I'll rest one leg bent forward when relaxing near them, I scream warning sounds if they become to bullish, I'll 'bite' with my hands and bump backwards into them in warning if they even think about crowding me at all, I'll give the 'evil horse eye' with a bowed head and shake my head away, stomp my foot, etc, etc. They understand me quite well and I'll tell ya what, if I had long straight ears, I'd be using those too!! I'm not crazy, but I'm sure I look it if anyone saw me!! hehehe You would think with all this horse talk that I give them that they would be worried or something, but they know me as top mare and not to be fooled with. My horses are all so awesome! They are terrific "people" to know!! Very mannerly to say the least. It certainly makes riding them a treat because even in the saddle I can feel their trust. We go everywhere on trails, in parades/fairs and just about anything you can think of...they behave extremely well in all kinds of situations. If they are scared of anything, they are checking with their rider first for direction. Course it goes to say that if we were scared in the saddle for any reason, they would pick up on that too. I've been riding since I was 9 yrs old, but just whenever I got to. My parents were not supportive of me riding and therefore, it wasn't until I was 20 yrs that I got to ride full-time for a couple of years. Then I took a hiatus for about 10 yrs (married/children) and started riding again after I did a horse round-up (500 head), out in Calgary, Alberta. LOVED IT...HAD A GREAT TIME!!! Bought a horse there (from the round up) and the rest is history. I truly love horses and riding them isn't what gets me 'centered' in my heart. I love watching them, smelling them and hearing their sounds. There is nothing in this world that makes me feel so serene and peaceful as a horse. Riding is a bonus. Their trust in me always makes me feel so accepted in their world. I feel so fortunate to just look outside my window and see a yard of horses. It makes me happy. Tina

LOL, Tina. I figured someone else would fess up out of the woodwork! I did it till I actually had my own horse. I still collect up & prance (work off my toes, heel, calf) when my legs or lower back hurts. It really helps me flex... --Debbie in GA
