Gaitingal and Maplewind made me think about my early love of horses. Used to play with a stick horse with a sock head, then watched and played "Spin and Marty" games, remember that tv show? Cute boys and horses ! I watched anything on tv with horses, my parents bought me plastic horses of all sizes and colors. ALso was a big reader, still am, and got all the MArguerite Kelly books, Album of horses, anything horse!  Never could really ride or have a horse because we were city kids and money was saved for college later. ALso used to try to get volunteer gigs around horses as a Girl Scout.

Married, had three kids, began to get middle age, menapausal crazy, and for my 26th wedding anniversary, also 52nd year of life, husband gave me riding lessons locally. Oh, yeah, big mistake! Within a month I blindsided my trainer by buying a three yr old green saddlebred mare off the internet from Illinois, I live in Virginia. Left her there in training, went to see her in the middle of the winter in Chicago area, then finally brought her to VA to a farm about an hour from our house. To make a long story short, husband took refresher lessons (he rode as a farm kid in Iran) and we bought a retired TB. LAst year we bought a second TB. Now we are finishing up fences, a barn and indoor arena and hoping to move the horses there next week. Cant wait! SO, dreams do come true!

t2Question, different thread....I read that if you are having mounting problems with your horse, she has not been used much lately because of all our work time at the property, you should immediately move her out on a lunge line and get her working, then try again. If I already have her in saddle and bridle, it will take time to take off the bridle, halter her, and get her lunging. I understand most retraining or "punishment" needs to be in 2 seconds to be effective. How should I manage this? Thanks, Linda

Yes!  Dreams really do come true and I am living proof of that too!

Regarding your question, lunge with the tack on.  It won't take much time for the horse to figure out the problem.

Good luck!

Ive ridden eratically most of my life. Enough to think I know what Im doing but not actually enough to be a good rider lol

Ive owned a horse for almost six years now but between me having problems and the horse having problems Ive probably only ridden less than a year t2

Answer to rvrytr:  Mine has this problem occasionally so I leave my thin rope halter on and put the bridle on over it, so I can hook the lead line to it and do ground work all saddled up...or just take your reins over their head and use them to longe.  Your circles will be small, but you only need to move their feet for a few seconds.  I also try scratching his belly before I mount, and continue while I step on the mounting block...he learns that standing there nice feels good too.

About this thread:  I rode the pony rides when probably 3 or 4...parents hated to drive that direction as I would beg and plead for a ride.  Then took English lessons at about 8 or 9 until about 13.  Rode whenever I could, other peoples or trail rides or hourly rentals until age 22 and in college.  I then bought my first horse and boarded.  That one was old, went lame, so off to a friends Dad's pasture, and I bought a QH who was the love of my life.  When I married, DH got the horse too.  Rode until 3 days before my second son was born, and sadly sold him, knowing I wouldn't have time to ride.

Rode when I could, on vacations or other peoples horses or rentals until Nov '08 when I got my avatar, Domino.  So this was 32 years without one.  And now I have what I think will be our 2nd horse on a trial.

To rvrytyr (did I get that right? lol )

Well if you have a very bribable horse...which I do..

I taught my horse "step up"...I would set him up to the mounting block with the cue words "step up" and have him stand there, then he would get a treat. When he did this easily I would get on the block..and of course at first he moved away, but I would put him back. When he stood there and I could put a foot in the stirrup he would get a treat. Then I had to be able to swing my leg over and back down, then the treat. Then fully mount, then the treat...then mount and stand there a minute or two, then the treat.  Then we would walk to the center of the arena, then the treat. After that the treats became pets but once in a while we did have to have a refresher course. He usually will step up on command now and knows how to take a step forward or a step back by touching his leg but it took a while to get down.

I tried the lunging thing but in a busy arena it was hard to accomplish so I had to come up with another idea.

The biggest thing I found out though was he was moving away from the mounting block because the saddle hurt him. s4 I'm hoping with good saddle fit it will never be an issue again.
