I used Envision by proggressive for my walker rescue and he has put on weight pretty quickly however it is pretty expensive. You may not need to go that far. I would try the oil first its the cheapest. Any kind will work, corn, vegetable, canola whatever is cheaper. If that doesn't work then try a supplement.

Happy birthday to the 30 year old!  My paso gelding just turned 25.  Yesterday I put him in the stall next to the foaling stall so he could see the new foal.  He loves her.  He didn't even eat hay for awhile, he was watching her.  The mare never pins her ears at him like she does with some of the other horses that come by the stall; she must sense that he means no harm.  I left him there for about an hour and when I went to get him, he didn't want to leave that stall!  He turned his head to the window, away from me.  (He never does this in his stall)  Then when I moved him, the filly was running around the stall, making her little filly noises and Bandit was nickering to her.  The weanlings usually go out with his group of pasture buddies and he always "protects" the weanling from the other horses.  Its so cute to watch.

I should've added that I give all my horses a little of the soaked beetpulp every meal. They all love it. I use it in winter time when they don't drink enough; a little pulp and fill the bucket with water. I also use it when I have to medicate them; no stress on me or the horse ;-). During bouts of colic it does miracles, especially when mineral oil is added.

The first time I started using it - on advice of my vet - was when my gelding, who is approximately 20 and whose teeth are 10 years older than that, started losing weight rapidly. Within 2 weeks I could see the weight coming back.

The mare in my avatar is the one who just turned 30; at the time of the picture she was 26. She hasn't changed a bit since except for some chest - and she's been retired as long as I've had her.

Gradually work up to adding a cup of soybean oil to feed daily. Buckeye Ultimate Finish, Strategy and Equine Senior are also good weight builders. Neither of them made my horses "crazy" either. HTH:)

I like rice bran to add fat and beet pulp to add muscle. If I just feed rice bran my horse gets a nice neck, just beet pulp and he gets a big butt. The combo gives him a nice round western pleasure look without making him spazzy. When I work him alot its 2/3 orchard 1/3 grass, in lazy months I switch it to 1/3 orchard 2/3 grass. All orchard and he's too hyper, all grass and he's lazy.
