I don't have a horse yet, just researching. I'm thinking I want a Tennessee Walker or Rocky Mountain horse. But when I find a horse, do I get the training bit first then the comfort bit? Can you just stay with the training bit and not change? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks! Elisa

My advice would be to either wait until you get a horse, or order both now so you are prepared. It really depends on the horses age and level of training and his attitude as well as if there are training issues that you need to correct. You won't know until you purchase your horse. Having said that, I have a 5 year old Paso that is very sensitive. I have her in the Comfort Gait but she could just as easily go in the Training and Transition for the rest of her life. She is soft as butter. I also have a 13 year old TW that goes great in the Comfort Gait but would not do as well in the Training and Transition. He is more go oriented and energetic and just needs the higher 'volume' of the shanked Comfort Gait bit. He is happy and responsive and relaxed (and that makes life easier for the rider). So, it will just depend on the circumstances which one is best. Be sure to share pics with us when you do get your horse!

I agree with Lakota. If you are considering an older horse, that has many miles under saddle and does not have any issues that need to be retrained, then the comfort bit will probably be best. But if it is a younger horse(say 5 or under) or even an older one that has not had much saddle time or needs some retraining then the training bit may be a better choice. However keep in mind that you can get the comfort bit and if the horse does need some retraining, the comfort bit does have rings so you can use it as a training bit as well for this purpose. Good luck and let us know what you get. Horse and bit.

Oh just want to add, yes you can stay with the training bit and not change. But again this is according to the horse. Some will do fine with the training bit and never need changing, others will take advantage of this bit as they are not as sensitive and you will want more control that the comfort bit will provide. If you were to get the training bit first and then find that you would like to change to the comfort bit. The resale on these bits are high, so you would have no problem selling your slightly used bit, if you decided to do so.
