Back in the 70's,I had a 3/4 Arabian mare(my horse of a lifetime) that did an AMAZING running walk! She impressed all the quarter, appy, paint diehards in our ETI group. At first, I took a LOT of ribbing about my "Crazy A-rab", but once they saw her in action, with me sitting aboard her, SMOOTHLY keeping their horses trotting hard, they were in awe. Is this unusual? I've never seen another like my Teka-she did a piaffe-like jog in parades, too. Her rw was complete with headbob, & smooth as glass. I STILL miss her...r1 tu1

Anyone else ever see a gaited Arabian?

Hey razzi,

There is a discussion string on gaited morabs, half gaited morgan and half arab.  Not all get the gait, but the morgan tones down the hot blooded arab.  It is a complimentary cross.  Whatever the missing 1/4 was it must have been gaited.  I had a 1/2 gaited morgan that was a great singlefooter (that's the morgan foxtrot).  He sailed everywhere I pointed him.  The really great ones don't just happen, they are made with much love, much sweat, much effort:D  and....ok, the dust, and the poopers, and the bugs, and the slobbers,  to1  but us gaited goofers love it all!

Have a great day,

Camanae, Handlebar D Ranch

Camanae,
Funny you should mention Morgans-that last 1/4 WAS Morgan-Tequila Gold-I remember the name, because I wanted to find out what she was blended with. Teka was a chestnut, Tequila Gold was a palomino Morgan. How do I get to the "string" you were talking about?(I'm new at computers, too)

Thanks,
r1 Jan (raz)Mana to you!w2

Actually full Arabians sometimes can and will gait. I've heard stories of Arabians that started gaiting on the trail when ridden with gaited horses.   :D

Morgans are the same.  Some can gait.  For years "gaited" Morgans were culled by breeders, but now there are lines of Morgans that allow/encourage the gait.

Some Quarter Horses can gait too! LOL

So there may/may not have been a gaited horse in Teka's immediate background.  Either way she sounds like she was a great horse!

Joi,
She was! She was really too much horse for me, but she took excellent care of me! She could go on a loose rein & follow my voice commands-but,put a man on her, & she CHANGED into an antsy-dancy! I bought her from a woman with 7 kids-they used to show her, but she'd drop her head & tuck her tail & pin her ears, so, natch she didn't win. But she was the world's best trail horse-part mountain goat & very sensible. Tight spots didn't faze her. The 1st time we took her out to preview a trail,we were on the side of a steep hill-I had to dismount & mount from the right-my friend,Neil, asked"can you do that from the right?" I said"we'll soon find out>" No Prob
Mana to you for your insight!
Thanks,
Raz r1

Hi Razzi!  As for finding something on the board, just type what you're looking for in the search box at the top of the page and then click search!  Happy hunting!  Jen

Any horse of any breed can be taught to gait, if you know how.

Thanks,Jen

Maybe the fact that she had been 3 years boarded at a TWH stable didn't hurt, either. She was a horsecrazy girl's dream-my first(at age 27).

My oldest daughter had an Arab, purebred with papers. She would do this wierd gate, half trot half running walk. I don't know how to explain it. She was a show horse, but a better trail horse. She did'nt start doing this consistantly, until she was around my racking horse. My racker would be racking along, and she would be doing this strange, long reaching gate, not a rack and not a canter, not a extended trot. She never did this in a show ring, Thank God. But the guy that purchased her from us, says she still does it and he rides her up in the mountains on hunting trips. He says she is a great trail horse because she is so smooth. This is really interesting to me. Thanks

I don't know gaits that well. I have never seen a fox trot. I will ask the new owner if he could video tape it. He was going to put her up for sale. Would this be a good selling point?

If the gait is smooth it might be a good selling point.  It all depends on what the person is looking for.  If you can post that video or any pictures we might be able to figure out what the horse is doing.  Jen

It may take some time and lots of help from my youngest daughter, but I will try.

Actually Razzi some Arabians do gait, the pld Abu Farwa lines were known to produce gaited horses that also could rack. I have a Half-Arab mixed with Walker and Morgan/Saddlebred, she is 6 gaited!!!!!

I've got an Arab mare (now in her 20s & retired) who when fit (she did endurance) she would happily pace - raised many eyebrows!!  She would also do a very rapid trot - but it wasn't like a normal trot - sounded very odd - can't explain it now as it was many years ago!  Another of my Arab mares (again high % Crabbet & an endurance horse) had an amazingly fast smooth trot - when excited she would also pace!  So YES - I can say Arabs can pace!!!:)

I've heard stories of horses starting to do some sort of gait when ridden with gaited horses.  I've seen several Arabs out trail riding that I did a double take at them because they appeared to be gaiting.  Horses that are in a hurry to get home but not allowed to trot will also learn to walk faster or gait.

A well trained, well bred  Arab is a rather soft gaited horse.  The trot is floating and comfortable, the canter is very rhythmic and easy to balance.  The old timey Arabs have more give in their joints which is reminiscent of the older model car shock absorbers.   Remember how smooth those  old 60's style Cadillacs and Impalas were?

Wow, where was that old post hiding?!!  I'm glad it got exhumed for me to see it now for the first time, because I have an Arab who will gait sometimes.  It's all too rare, but he would do a super smooth, unidentified gait under certain conditions.  One, if the ground was flat and hard, and Two, if he was in a frame of mind to go faster than I wanted him to go, usually when he wanted badly to canter but I was keeping him in a trot; like on the way home or at an endurance race.  I liked it but didn"t encourage it because he seemed stiff and hollow backed when he was doing it  He's semiretired.  He's full of snot and vinegar and keeps us entertained.  His name is ZB.  We love him.  He loves Mountain Dew and will drink it straight from the can.  He won't touch diet, though.  He does the "flehmen" if we offer that!

Debbie
