It's snowing gobs here, so I'm not able to ride, so I've been reading back issues of my horse magazines, and daydreaming alot....which made me curious. What breed would you guys most like to try out?

I'd love to test ride an Icelandic. (wouldn't mind owning one, either, if the ride went well) I'd also like to try out a Paso.  So what breed would you guys like to road test?

Peg

I'm with you, an Icie or a Paso.  They're gait just seems so natural.  I have to work so hard to get mine to stay in gait.

ya know......I really have no desire to ride any horses other than the ones I have.  I've had a paso - and I'll tell ya he was a BLAST to ride!  Those smooth, short little steps.....  but...the TWHs we rode with always left us behind.  We didn't care tho....he and I were having a GRAND ol time!  My sister had a peruvian.....and again - BLAST to ride - but I wouldn't want one as my main horse....I like a little more 'move out' factor.  Never felt like I was getting anywhere.....  lol

I seriously can't come up with any other breed that I'd like to try....... Guess that's a GOOD thing! :)

I've always wanted a Fjord and a Friesian, and a buckskin/paint Gypsy!

LOL l1, I am with you! I was thinking the very same thing, then saw your post.

I do love them all and as you know each breed is unique. I would love to be able to go to a place and try out each breed.

But if i had to choose. It would be Paso, Icelandic, Speed Racker, Andalusian, Freshian just to start it all out.

I'd like to try an Icelandic and, though not gaited, a Friesian. I've always loved the look of them and they seem to float at the trot. I'd also like to try a foxtrotter as I've never experienced that gait.

Wow, lots of folks here who'd like to try an Icey...

My hubby and I did just that this year, in Vermont on our 30th anniversary trip there. We stayed here: http://icelandichorses.com/ and rode for miles each day of our stay near Stowe. They were lots of fun, though I didn't come back in any danger of wanting one of my own..I recommend the place to anyone who's itching to test drive an Icelandic. Plus, Vermont is incredibly beautiful in the Autumn, as you can see..

Pretty picture Stormz.  I always wanted to ride a Friesian just to feel the big bounce!  But for the gaited I want to ride a MFT that is natural in its gait, that would be my next choice for a horse I think.

Stormz,  My husband and I rode there a couple of years ago.  I agree with you, while we enjoyed the scenery and the ride on the Icys we did not leave wishing that we could own one.  I found their tolt to be rougher than I enjoy.....I attributed it to their short legs.  LOL   I love my MFT.  Would love to try a TW or a Rocky.....have riden all the other gaited breeds that are common.

I just recently rode a Rocky and was very impressed with the consistency of his gait.  He landed a bit hard though and so wasn't really light footed, but he was fun.  I tried out a slightly super-charged Paso before finding Domino, my TWH, and though I loved the gait, found myself wondering if I wanted to do that pitter patter pitter patter all the time.  I decided against it.

This may sound crazy, but I have always wondered what riding one of the Budweiser Clydesdales would feel like!  I have ridden my friends 18 hh Percheron, but he doesn't have that light, airy step that they do.  Her Percheron is like riding a mini-van...you know it between your thighs the next day!  I had to climb a mounting block to saddle him!

I think (if I could survive it) a speed racker would be another of my dreams come true!

I'd love to try an Icelandic, and Fox Trotter (I don't have to own them or feed them, right?) ;)

The speed racker would also be fun to try, but not something I'd want to have all the time. I'm at the age where slow and steady is more my pace.

I have a Paso, and although he doesn't gait particularly well, he does move with small steps. If you want to go anywhere, you'd better take your lunch.

Ya, I hear you. I think some of these people don't train the speed rackers for anything but 'fast'. They are still horses and need to go at the riders desired speed even if that means a slow rack. Granted, they'll probably be taking pretty big strides, but they can slow it down a little.

Karen, I've got 2 Rockies who have beautiful, smooth gaits.  Don't let that guy throw you off of Rockies or represent the breed for you!

I also have a Percheron/TB cross who is almost all Percheron in character.  I've also ridden a Clydesdale, and the gait is very similar.  Those big guys may look like they have floaty trots, but it's all thunder under an animal that big and powerful.  If you didn't like the gait of a Percheron, I doubt a Clydesdale would feel any different to you.  But, you won't know unless you try it!

Hi Dawnrider,

A Peruvian Paso with lots of spirit and termino would be my first choice and second would be a superfast speed racking Standardbred or a Saddlebred.r1

I would want to try an Icey.  Or a speed racker.  Or just any horse that a smooth no-bounce gait.  I did the "bounce thing" when I was young and now just want to GLIDE.
