So I just got a new little horse (pony actually) he's a 13.2hh 4yr old blue roan kentucky mountain horse. He is an amazing little guy, we have just one problem....he has a TINY/FINE head and a really small muzzle. I measured his mouth yesterday and it's 3 3/4"!! I am so stuck! I have Brenda's bit for my spotted and LOVE it and want nothing more than to get one for Clue, but it is WAY too big....I know we're not supposed to discuss other brands on here, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem w/ their gaited pony's and what did you do? Have you ever heard of a gaited pony bit? Brenda, can we custom order comfort gait bit in a smaller size  :D

Thanks for your help!!!

I have a "gaited pony" bit, but the thing is something on almost 200 years old. That i am sure would fit, It just so horribly rusted I wouldn't put it anywhere near a horse's mouth. But then I also have an American Walking Pony, her mouth I think is about 4 and 3/4" she's 13.2 hands but I think probably from the TWH blood behind the breed that was mixed with the welsh is what has made them thicker.  With Sunny the bit fits still. It looks big on her because she's rather refined but cobbish looking. But then just about anything I put on her looks huge! But it works and she loves it.

Here's an idea though. Maybe try the Imus Training Bit. It's over all "smaller" visually and might then look better. But just about anything you use on him will look HUGE it's just something we pony lovers have to deal with in a "horse" oriented world.

Thanks for the ideas....I did try the Imus training bit and it is still really large. I have been able to find alot of 4" bits, but most of them are either just the standard grazing curbs, snaffles and tom thumbs. I did find a site called just for ponies that has alot of bits, but they mostly snaffles. I was hoping to find something that would fit and be comfortable for him as well as have shanks to allow me to work on his headset.  I really don't know what to get, I am so in love with my Imus bits, but they are just too big!! It's SOOO frusterating, I feel like I've been on the CPU for days looking~Are ponies not supposed to get nice comfy AND functional bits? (Sorry I'm venting)

Gaited Ponies are still underground. But you do have another Association you can register him with American Gaited Pony Registry.  I have had the same problem with my AWP , she just doesn't fit anything really.

I've been riding a very finely built Paso Fino that's about 13.2 hands. I use the comfort gait bit & he works very well in it. Yes it does hang out each side quite a bit but you know the copper roller seems to 'self center' the whole thing.

You may have to disregard how it looks to you, and just train and ride & see how he works in it. If you think it's a little too strong, why you can go back to the Imus training bit. (BTW, if you have no more use for the training bit, I'm kinda looking for a good deal on a used one.l1)
