My RMH, is starting to gait more and more. Now he has a found a new gait which confounds me. When he starts to canter in the pasture or with me, he really raises himself up and lunges forward. However, now he can do the canter on the front and something else with his hindlegs that's a bit slower. What gait is that ? he also on occasion and has done some really crazy high-stepping thing with his front legs. His best gait seems to come when he is moving really fast, he is really powerful and can start chugging along like a freight train while he gaits. He's doing some weird stuff these days.t2 Anne-Marie

Actually I should add that he is usually lazy, but he can turn it up and he's so powerful and fast it scares me a little bit, he's also hard to stop when he really gets it going.s2

The canter in the front and something different behind sounds like the dreaded 'cantalope'. It usually comes when a horse is out of shape - or lazy like you said. Don't try to encourage it but instead, work the walk and the correct gait will come.

l1, never heard of that one! Cantalope!! Yes, that's what it felt like, canter + lope. Thanks, whatta!! whattarack wrote: The canter in the front and something different behind sounds like the dreaded 'cantalope'. It usually comes when a horse is out of shape - or lazy like you said. Here's a discussion that you might want to read. There is another discussion linked to it. You are not the only one who has expirenced this. I hope you can correct it ASAP. Best Wishes, Whatta http://www.gaitsofgold.com/wowbb/view_topic.php?id=8267&forum_id=17&highlight=cantalope

Thanks Whatta!!!! Learned something new. Never heard that expression before, but makes sense. At least when he did it, I did discourage him.tu1
