Tommy Garland had a grey walker on his show this week on RFD.  I had never seen such an animated head shake.   From top to bottom, there must have been 2 feet of distance the horse's nose was moving.  When the girl on him went from flat walk to running walk, you couldn't hardly notice any speed change at all.  The head may have started bobbing a bit faster, but it didn't look like there could have been over a mile or 2 per hour difference in the gaits.  Oh, and when this horse cantered his whole front end was as animated as his head was on the walk.  His front end was almost jumping.  If his head would come back about another foot it looked like the rider would get cracked right in the nose.  You could really see the overstride though. He was light shod.  He didn't have the big shoes or nothing.  She was dressed for western pleasure.  Tommy Garland was helping her with a bridge crossing problem the horse had.

Again i am completely new at gaited horses but trying diligently to figure it all out.  i am learning so much from ya'll.  I have been working up hill at a walk, very entergetic, and boy does it ever feel good.  i keep thinking he will eventually get that run walk.  it is very difficult on the flat to get any implusion.  he just wants to stiffen up and step pace or something.  anyway.  he isn't doing a run walk but something else but with a decent overstride.  what would that be?

thanks,

susan

Susan,

It's practically impossible to say what gait your horse is doing without seeing it.  You could post a video on youtube.com and post the link here on the message board.

Boy, oh boy, what a mismash of info.  The rack and running walk are totally different gaits.  Both are 4 beat gaits, and that's where the similarity ends.  There are many videos on line that you can view to see the differences.

For example, in the true rack only one foot is on the ground at a time.  In the rack the front foot leaves the ground before the hind foot on the same side.  In the running walk the rear foot leaves the ground first.

Running walk horse may or may not have the natural ability to rack.  The length of the stride has nothing to do with either. Ditto, a racking horse may or may not have the natural ability to do the running walk.  Very few horses will do either naturally.

The rack, the tolt, the corto, the largo, and depending on what part of the country your from, the saddle, are all the same gait.

A horse that has a natural rack will not necessarily use more energy than a running walk horse at the same speed.  In fact, a natural racking horse, will use far less energy than a running walk horse doing the "big lick", a lot less.
