If there was no suspension in the trot, then it was a fox trot!  :D

Yeah the link don't work Karen, lets see Lacey .

You know I don't feel that much front to back slide when I ride, especially now that I fill up my saddle more, :(   and Jerry is very fluid in his motion and rocks and rolls with the horse,  I tend to stiffen up more.

I feel most of my movement I think from my knees to my feet bobbing,  and a slight right to left sway, the slide I think is at the slower gaits or a deep walk.

Personally if I were looking at a different gaited breed for myself it would be a Peruvian,  I just love the look of there gait, never ridden one.

Had a woman and her daughter riding ahead of us on some last ride and I asked if they were Peruvians,  she was sooo exciteded someone recognized her breed, she said everyone always calls them Paso's,  they looked very smooth and cover the ground quicker than the Paso's.

I have neighbors I ride with... one has a Peruvian gelding, the other a Rocky Mountain.  I will have to say both are wonderful horses, calm to ride, but each gait differently, but look so smooth.  The Peruvian especially can build up speed and stay smooth, and its rider had back/hip/knee problems for years and was still comfortable riding her Peruvian, and recently had hip replacement surgery and got back up riding in no time.

Karal, my buddys registered Foxtrotter does nothing but a stepping pace. I have found the foxtrot gait to be uncomfortable to me. The forehand of the horse is taking a walking step and has very little rise and fall. The hind quarters are bobbing up and down taking a leaping step, and this causes the cantle to give a little forward thrust with every step. That is what bothers me, even if the horse is relatively smooth. Ugh! Wish I had my youth back...

Can't let Jo show her pretty mare without throwing in a short, and not so fabulous video of our Lacey, who's got similar breeding as Mira. Lacey steps in a little hole at one point and the trees are in the way of seeing consistent footage...sorry!

http://m.youtube.com/?reload=3&rdm=m3nv5b5d3#/watch?v=fr4T-CfVkFU

I would describe her rack as a more side to side gentle rock in the saddle.

This is Jennifer, our barn owner riding her.

I would love to ride a paso. The trail ride I use to go on a lady rode a paso. It was just a bitty thing, don't know if he was 14 hands. But then I was riding a 15.2 QH so a lot looked small. But he was so cool, his feet did double time, though he was not real fast moving forward. Sure looked fun though.

I love my MFT. They vary in smoothness too. I have back troubles from time to time, but never had troubles after riding. So their gait doesn't bother my back.

My SSH (avatar) is a Morgan cross. She has a very unique gait. I have had a lot of people ask me if she has paso in her because of her front leg action. Her gait covers ground fast. She is so cool to ride, and oh so smooth.

I looked at many youtube videos last night and I think you are right about the Foxtrotters.

I also noticed the Peruvians looked more up and down and maybe the Mountain horses.

Can't wait to actually get on some of these breeds:)

I am battling a shoulder injury this week so that has put my search on hold:( I hope it resolves itself soon because I am chomping at the bit:)

I believe it was the lady on the white with some black walker.

Mira was being a pill it was our first show and Jerry had Coal outside the arena and she was chomping at the bit and calling to him,  I hear him also hollar in the background on that video, we had not had them together long and they were very attached, they do better apart now.

I think that the rack and the running walk have some degree of front to back slide, some can really sling you back and forth like you was on a boat in high seas, and those also seem to be the ones with a rougher walk.

I met one man that also said the the rack really worked a bad spot in his back and he could not ride it, so that may be your problem also.

What about a foxtrotter,  I have no idea but I think they look to me like what you are talking about, a more up and down but softer motion,  here is a pretty one.

My other TWH does the running walk or a step pace I am not really sure, but I know his plain ole walk can get really sloppy and uncomfortable to ride.

http://www.hunterhillmorganfarm.com advertises both gaited and non-gaited Morgans.

I hear what you are saying about not looking at specific breeds, but I know of no other gaited breeds that can perform suspensionless trots other than the Peruvians and their spanish cousins. She might get along better with that type of gait.....

Morgan are indeed gaited. Morgans are one of the foundation horses of the TWH. The modern Morgan of today, it depends on what blood lines you have if you have a gaited Morgan or not.

wikipedia: In 1885, Black Allen (later known as Allan F-1) was born. By the stallion Allendorf (from the Hambletonian family of Standardbreds) and out of a Morgan mare named Maggie Marshall, he became the foundation sire of the Tennessee Walking Horse breed.

I don't know if I would look at a specify breed.  Horses can very greatly even within the breed for smoothness of gait.  I hope you can find the perfect fit. Happy horse hunting.

Such a pretty girl you have there Jo!!

Thanks for sharing your videos.

I noticed in your class when you are riding her and also when the man was riding her your hips look as though they are rocking front to back. That is the motion that hurt my low back so bad.

I think I need something with more of and up down motion just soft instead of bumpy like the QHs.

The front to back slinky like roll(I don't know how to explain it....lol) really puts pressure on that nerve in my back.

Here is my TWH mare with my husband , she racks and any other speed she does is also very comfortable, and this mare is natural,  she was my first gaited horse so I had no idea what I was doing and she was smooth,  of course she has gotten better as I have learned more.

This is a video I took while riding her and you can see the faster she racks the smoother the camera is.

Here is one of me at a show, we placed 2nd in that group :)

That sounds like a great idea. Be aware though that there are a lot of horses on there that are fairly lateral (performing the pace and stepping pace). If you get Brenda's latest book The Gaited Horse Bible, all the gaits are laid out for you making it easier to pick out what's happening in the youtube videos. That is one way to look at a lot of horses without much hassle.

Then when you try them out in person you can see/hear/feel what they are doing and you'll know what kind of gait you're looking for. Horse shopping can be a lot of fun.:D

Would love to see video!

When i have time i am going to spend some time on youtube trying to familiarize myself with how the gaits should look.

I am also going to try to get video of all the horses that I ride so yall can give me your opinions on their gaits.

:)
