I have heard that Peruvian Pasos are the smoothest of all the gaited horses. Perhaps you could find one to try out.

like i wrote in another thread, there is minimal jarring with either of my gaited horses (TWH, icelandic); I just have to make sure I keep my shoulders down and don't tense up as that hurts the neck more than the ride ever has. Anyone who has chronic spine issues eventually finds what makes it worse, and what doesnt--and since riding doesnt make things worse, figure I am going to always have the discomfort, at least i should enjoy myself anyhow!

Sorry to hear you got hurt, but at least you have a diagnoses.

I have 3 TWH and all of mine feel completely different to me.

My spotted mare is the most comfortable to me at ALL speeds and is the easiest to get into gait and maintain it,  my sabino gelding has a rolling walk that can make me feel seasick after about 3 hrs of it and is harder to get into gait at just that right speed and hold him in it, he always trys to get faster on me.

My husbands black walker does a running walk that really feels like he is covering the ground when you ride him yet he is the slowest of my 3 and I will run off and leave them behind when I am riding either of my 2.

So best thing you can do is find a horse that you like and try it out and try as many as possible so you have something to base each horses gait off of.

I don't have any neck problems or bone spurs/degeneration, but I did have an inflamed disc in my lower back when I was 21. I really have a hard time not getting disgusted at those people who do nothing to take care of themselves and have perfect health. Hang in there....

Hi all,

I injured my shoulder shortly after this posts and after weeks of pain found out that it was not a shoulder injury at all:( Turns out I have a bulging disk, bones spurs and degeneration in my neck.

So mostly I have been doing a lot of resting, very little work and NO riding.

Do any of you have similar problems in your neck? My chiropractor seems to think that I will be able to ride again soon, I will just have to have someone saddle her up for me and will have to use a mounting block for sure. Will have to take it really easy on my QH mare.

After months of this pain it is hard for me to believe I can find a horse that I will be able to ride comfortably:(

Really needing some support!

Thanks!:)

I agree that all the comments have been great, and Slipslider, that was well thought out.:)

Your thoughts about TWH's line up with what we have. Our boy has WGC's on his papers 7 times and he definately can get, uh, 'FEISTY'. He's only 14.2 and prefers to rack and is very smooth. I doubt that he was ever shown big lick & maybe not at all, but he has a lot of go & isn't always the safest trail horse.

We have noticed better behavior in the Imus Comfort bit & 4-Beat saddle, but he is bred this way and you really can't change the genetics. There are TWH's that are much more suitable for trail riding/family use out there.
He really is a nice horse, but not what a first time gaited rider needs. You have to be a good rider/trainer to handle him.:to1 :

Just caught this thread and have to chime in. I completely agree with most of what has been stated so far.

1) If you try one breed and don't like what you experience, do not rule that breed out, as many stated in depends on the horse's conformation and what gait they are performing. Some are smoother then others. Also remember that many will tell you the horse is doing one thing when in reality it is doing something totally different. Either because they themselves do not know or they are just trying to make a sale. If you searched youtube, you will find that many times the horse is not performing the true gait the person states that it is.
I would stay away from the TW Big Lick show horses (those that have many WGC bloodlines). Unfortunately these horses have been bred for show. Therefore they have bred for nervous and pacey type horses for the Big Lick. That is where the misrepresentation comes from that they are high strung crazy horses. These horses were not originally this way and there are many very nice out there.  I know there are exceptions, but on the whole, it would be wise to steer clear of them.

2) I agree the Peruvian are wonderful horses and one of the most comfortable I have ever ridden!  Most all Pasos, Peruvian or Finos are on the small size, 14-15 hands. Again do your homework on them and some are smoother then others. They carry DSL, so want to steer clear of that. Might also be hard to find one within your budget. I found mine through a rescue.

3) Most of all and what i am surprised no one has mentioned is....do not overlook the grade horse! Unless you are into showing or breeding. This would be a great horse to look at and will likely be cheaper then a registered horse. The best trail horses I have ever ridden were all grade horses.

4) Also know that there are many gaits and many speeds of the gait. Some horses perform their gait very fluidly and effortlessly at many different speeds. Some can only go at a slow speed and if pushed faster may go out of gait.

So I would outline what criterias i am looking for in a trail horse. You may find a wonderful horse with a great gait, but cannot perform that gait any faster then a QH jog. Also you may wish for your horse to be able to canter as well. Many do not train the horse to canter, some will have a hard time doing so. So if you want one that does, be sure that it can preform such.
This is all just food for thought in hopes it will help you find your perfect partner!  Good luck and please keep us informed. We love hunting right along with you!

Ok my 2 cents..

I ride a lot of differant horses..and some are much more natural then others in all breeds so and "none of then can read papers" so it all comes down to mental wireing and conformation. and disposition . If I were giveing advice to someone looking for a new horse in this market .

First stay away from sales...dont have the time to properly evaluate a horse in that situation and even the most expieranced get taken. Dont get a horse that "needs this or that to make him gait" find one that will gait with just i minium of contact. As a new rider to gaited breeds you dont what to have to work on maintaining gait . Look for something natural..and bare foot at least just keg shoes .

If your are shopping creigs list look at Spotted Saddle horses to and sometimes just called Saddle Horse. But always have owner ride first ! And if it dosnt feel right just walk away .

Also rember training isnt cheep but medical bills are much more expincive . And think what do you want to "train three times" minimum or just get out and ride every weekend  (you get what you pay for unless you are very lucky) . I Love my TWH horses the best and no ther not crazy as a rule or high strung a good walking horse that has been trail riden and not trained for the show ring is a great mount and a wonderfull companion.

Hi Meghan, newbie to the board chiming in. I have a Paso that is smooth as silk! He is also very affectionate, can be a little hot but not exsessive. He's also 19YO, so don't let age scare you if the horse has been well taken care of. My boy trail rides with QH's just fine. I also took him to cow sorting the other night and that was a blast. I will say that I have also owned a KMH and she was a nice smooth ride with a very good head on her. Good luck and I would say yes, ride as many as you can to see what fits and doesn't hurt..:wg1 :

Did you go to ride him? To see if you like the gait, or if you are like me, you are staying away because you might fall in love?

Yes I have seen the gelding in Augusta... they actually contacted me about trading for the mare I had a while back.

I really want to stay under 10 or at the most 12 years old... just because my other horse is 16 and I don't want to have to look at replacing two horses at the same time when they are to the point of retiring.

Thanks, Noelle, we will have to ride together sometime.

Meghan, there is a Peruvian paso for sale in Augusta, GA that is on Eqine Now. He looks nice, 14.2, a little older, 17 I think, but that may be fine. They want $1200. Maybe worth a look see?

Hey Brenda.:D No, this was a trot. I was riding the shod horse on blacktop and have video tape of it. (Unfortunately not digital video, so no chance to share it.)

It was a clear two beat trot. She would pick up the two diagonal feet while the other two were still on the ground, therefore no susension or bounce. I read where in one of the countries where these horses were bred, they also bred for the trot as well as the 4 beat gaits. It was a first for me, never experienced that gait before.
