Aha!! just found it... there were two Triggers used during the Roy Rogers movies and episodes.  One was out of a thoroughbred and cold blooded mare, this was the first one selected, but with the popularity of Roy Rogers and Trigger, a back up horse was needed and this one was a Register TWH (known internally as Trigger Jr by the show)... so I am betting the show I watched last week was showing off the Trigger Jr, the TWH... which was the back up horse :))  So I was seeing gaiting!

The fast gait that I can get the mare to do ,The one I think maybe a rack she can go around 10-14-mph (I used a GPS while I rode her to find out what speed she was doing). The gait that she does most of the time is around 4-7 mph.

There were actually 3 Triggers. Trigger, Little Trigger and Trigger,Jr. The latter being a TWH. You can read about it here:

Noellee, if you were watching the black and white 'Roy Rogers Show', that was Trigger. He called him the 'Old Man' as he was the first Trigger. He is not by a Thoroughbred, he is the Mountain Horse as per the Gaited Horse article. I have scrutinized lots of those old shows and his movies and he did not gait. However, he moved and carried himself like the Mountain Horse he was - just didn't have any gait.

Buttermilk was bulkier and I always figured 'Quarter Horse'. Could have been a Foxtrotter though as I clearly saw that horse gait on an episode a while back. (Dale's buckskin).

Little Trigger was used a lot for personal appearances. I remember seeing him ride out on stage and spin around on his front leg & do the rhumba to La Coocaracha on a youtube clip. Very cool.

Trigger Jr.'s registered name was Allen's Gold Zephyr or something like that if I'm not mistaken. He was a Tennesee Walking Horse and not related to Trigger. Roy raised palominos and had a lot of horses. They were all 'Trigger' to most folks. (Sorry to have hijacked this thread.)

LaVonne, I can't resist adding that the youtube video you linked for a good example of the rack is a horse I dearly love! In fact I corresponded quite a bit with the owner before I found Lacey. I just couldn't justify going that far just to look at a horse. But she's got a great gait for sure!

wow, that is strange. I just looked for TWH and selected the first ones I came across that I thought were good examples.
