A little faster than the flat walk my horse moves with a different gait in that it's a little bumpy but nothing like a trot. He doesn't bob his head and he trots with his front feet and walks in the back. He doesn't bring up his front feet as high as others. What gait is this? I have to have tight reins because he will keep going fast and easily breaking into a canter... What do I do and what gait is this? I need help!!!

stepping pace?s4 cute horse. I would spend some time doing; suppling/flexion -getting him softer to the bridle, teach him to soften to each side and the head/nose will start to come in on its own because he will be softer/lighter! Ofcourse you don't want them bracing against your hand/reins. You need contact but goal is to have the lightest contact possible so the horse is in self carriage -- to carry himself better, bringing his hindend under, lightening up his front end(which will allow his shoulder to free up and really move well) ** lateral work esp, things like shoulder in, haunches in/out, leg yield, turn on the forehand/haunches etc..) - teach him to move well off your leg get him light to your aids and he'll square up his gaits! Brenda has a lot of excellent info in her articles for this type of issue. Pole work, lots of hills, sometimes canter work can help the pacey horse because its more of a diagonal movement.
