l1 Please don't loose those five pounds, it seems as though I always find them.LOL I have heard from a lot of people that a tired horse is a listening horse. I have had horses that were a catch 22-the more I rode them the more I had to ride them. They would keep getting more muscled-up and would take hours of riding to get them tired enough to listen and by then I was to tired to ride. What a dilemma.

softride wrote: l1 Please don't loose those five pounds, it seems as though I always find them.LOL That is so funny... Rain has been getting muscular from our trails here, now that I look at old pictures and new ones, so you may be very right about not wearing him out... the closest I ever came was riding him three days in a row all day long. He actually listens wonderfully in the saddle as you are moving... he listens on the ground without tack and even on the halter/lead. It is those times when I first get in the saddle to head out, he wants to get started quicker than I asked. Or those times he is ready to move on and I have him tied up, then he paws. Or when I have to mount from the ground that is really the issue left on the table for me to work with most. I love his energy and response... at 16hhs and me weighing in more now than I should however, I can't get up and in the saddle from the ground like the old days. The little bit of move off from him and we are back to step one of me trying again. From the house I mount him from a very large stump that puts my foot right there at the stirrup, so I just "walk over" into the seat. He has learned to hold still for me here... and on the trail if I use a high mount like this, he holds still. It is the ground mounting and me struggling... it is somehow sending a message to him to move off, and we got to work on this. Once I am in the saddle, if he does move off sooner than I asked, I reign him and he listens nicely, stops, might do a little dance in place waiting for the party to set off. That has not bothered me as I can read his next move and it is just a little more dancing in place. I was telling Chris last night that I am confident riding all three of my geldings. I often hauled Bo, my 10yr QH, to Uwharrie alone, rode solo on these trails or met up with a group... I feel like I can do that with River, my 4yr QH... and I feel like I can do it with Rain if I don't ever have to dismount! But of course I will, girl's gotta take a tree break at some point. Bo and River are less than 15hhs or about that, stand very still when mounting or dismounting... that 4" more on Rain is tough when he moves off and I am trying to mount, and I don't have the mounted height to get me in the saddle fast. OK... we gotta work on this, lol. I am sure I am not the only one who faced this. Chris said if started saddling up Rain every evening, he would be the one to hold him still while I learned the old art of mounting from the ground again. Maybe this will motivate me to lose those 5 pounds, actually 5x3 and lose those 15lbs would be best and get me lighter and limber again! Last edited on Wed Apr 20th, 2011 10:19 pm by NOELLEE |

I was told that if you rock the saddle before you even put your foot into the stirrup it gives the horse a chance to set his feet and then you mount. If he moves, bring him back around to where he was and rock again. Then try to mount, I mean mount. LOL The same before you get off. When you stop, rock side ways in the saddle and then dismount. Sometime they walk off because they are unbalanced and it is just easier than standing and letting us pull ourselves up. At least it is worth a try.

I was going to add that the thought is now that it is harmful to the horses back if you mount from the ground all the time that you should use a mounting block. And that is why I always use a mounting block (and thats my story and I am sticking to it lol- it has nothing to do with a 15.3 hh horse, a wrist with plates and screws in it - really does hurt to pull up with it- and way too much weight to be hauling up that high) I NEVER EVER get off on the trail (unless it is an emergency) w/out finding some place to get back on from. My wrist will hurt for a couple of days if I do mount from the ground anyway. On the trails I use all the time I have the whole place scoped out for good mounting blocks-: ) I have a stool I can carry with my too- but it is really bulky. With doing the ACTHA they HAVE to remain still when mounting so it is something we work on. And I actually carry a crop on the trail and will smack her butt if she will not stand still when I want her too on the trail. Yep- I have to smack her to make her stand still not to make her move. She is a tad backwards. Most of the time though I just end up smacking the saddle bags and the noise and movement is enough to refocus her back on me and what I am asking and away from the GO GO GO impulse. I tried just tapping but that seems to encourage more animation, a good pop and she is like "OH! You want me to do something!"

Ohhhh, Lisa, I hate to hear this about your friends horse! Poor thing! Hope she'll be okay. And the farm is a total loss and the other horses too - that's horrible! I really feel for them. Yes, those storms were scarey. Didn't affect us, but there were some definite wind shear bursts or mini tornadoes around where we board. Trees broken off, mobile homes roofs snatched off, etc. but thank goodness nothing at our BO's place. We never know what might be around the corner, do we?

I have more info- there was an article on line too about the barn. 12 horses were killed- many had to be put down right after the tornado because they were so badly injured (implaled like Little Girl was) Two were crushed in the indoor arena. The BO house was damaged but not destroyed, the trainers house, trailer etc was totally destroyed- they lost everything. http://www.richardbealblog.com/?p=8611 Little Girl looks good considering how others faired. My friend posted a pic on FB. Poor thing is covered in pink- she has stiches - it looks like all the way around her neck. Plus some other wounds. She was in surgery something 4 hours, but it looks like she will make a complete recovery. They are worried about infection in the shoulder joint and are monitoring her until she can make the trip back to Va- they think it will be a couple of weeks.

I didn't even know how bad the storms damaged the eastern counties until days later. No wonder I got several emails from dear friends who were concerned for our safety. I've been so preoccupied with my thoughts that I wouldn't know if my own hair was on fire. The storms passed right over us that day without any real damage. It has been sad to learn of the losses that so many suffered from these storms. Thank you for posting this link and showing us another open door for opportunity to help someone out. My best wishes and prayers for your dear friend and all those who have been affected by this tragic event.

We had some really bad tornados here- missed us, but two neighboring counties had major damage- and in Gloucester there was loss of life. Blair- my friend, won a scholarship for riding (reining) and is a really really good rider and spent her last summer working at this farm. She even transferred to the nearby college so she could keep her horse there and train with them. Little Girl is really sweet. Blair is one of the few young people who I would allow to stay in my house (house set) while I am gone and I know my critters are all going to be well taken care of. A very very sweet girl, and her Mom is also a friend. Instead of accepting donations, they are hustling to try and do things to earn money like selling Mary Kay, etc. The vet bills are and are going to be enormous. I have always heard in a tornado- turn them out and if there is time turn them loose. (meaning let them out of the field) the article I linked to said put them in a barn, but still- if the barn gets a direct hit??? Like the covered arena- well. I still think if they CAN get out of the way of the storm they will. But who has time when there is a tornado? Around here you really dont get much warning, and I am not going to be turning them loose everytime they say we MIGHT get one. Actually I have a thought for a new thread...
