Our Mature Ladies' Riding Group went for a schooling ride at Lake Mendocino (Northern Calif) Thursday, and it was a successful ride for all of us. I had my MFT, one rider has a Fjord, and two were riding Mustangs whose preferred gait is a smooth single-foot. All of us have confidence issues, mostly due to being injured while riding, and our trainer worked us through exercises that were relatively easy, but gave a big boost when accomplished. In the photo, Pipi, one of the mustangs, is meeting "scary rocks" for the first time. Her rider persisted and Pipi eventually went through calmly.

Later in the ride, we each learned how to back between two trees, then do a turn on the forehand and back in a straight line. Easy exercises, but we gave each other encouragement and praise as they were completed. Doing exercises we practiced in the arena feels different when done out on the trail.

The previous Saturday, I rode in my first competitive Trail Obstacle Ride. My goal was to finish the ride - 3-1/2 hrs - and I did. Lola, my MFT, did everything I asked of her and when we didn't complete an obstacle, it was my inexperience, not her willingness. We've come a long way, baby!

Congratulations.  Just never give up and keep pursuing.   It would be great to have a group like that to ride with.  Personally, I don't know any "mature" ladies to ride with, but I will definitely be taking lessons, AGAIN.  It's been awhile, but I can't wait to get started.  Weather here is Mariposa, is gorgeous right now, as I'm sure it is in Mendocino County.  Keep up the great work!

That is so awesome - sure wish we had a trainer like that around here - we just have to practice those skills on our own. We did ride yesterday at a state park that's wild and wooly but only heard some rattlers when we were off trail - we scooted right back to the trail and stayed there.
