today - really the last few rides- Jenny has been less than smooth. 2 things I am seeing- I am not sure about the fit of our 4beat- I am not real happy with the sweat pattern- it seems to be bridging- and its a wide- So today we were out and she was alternating between a rough 4 beat rack (it was a rack- just not smooth like she can be) and a step pace.(urgh) I would half halt the step pace back to the not smooth rack - it was bearable- but not her smooth gait. So we went on a wooded trail- one of her absolute favorite trails and its pretty rough- winding, branches and debri, lumps and dips actually have to step really high over several trees. And she wanted to GO (not unusual- she knows this trail and for some stupid reason loves it) And she was the smoothest she has been in a long time. I am not sure if it was because she couldnt go full out like she likes to do due to the terrain so she was slower- and because she had to pick up her feet- smoother (she really is the ultimate 4 wheel drive- lol) But how do I mimic this in the ring to develop this on demand???

You know they all have different moods at times. Sounds like she was 'jiggy' and full of it. The trail probably helped her use all that attitude up and smoothed her out. My little Paso had a moment once where we went past a field of HUGE cattle, she would not stand still w/o rearing. So I let her keep gaiting. Then we went past an Amish place that raises peacocks (they sound like something from the rain forest!). Lemme tell ya, that short striding Paso gait went into singlefooting/speedracking overdrive! No, I can't get that out of her now. Only when she's scared and all fired up. They're animals you know, not pushbutton machines.... Hope this helps some.

Lakota! This was at the END of a 10 mile ride! But she always has more in the tank. I can never seem to tire her out or out ride her. She will try and pass the trailer if she thinks our ride has not been long enough- and even with the trailer in sight she will attempt to turn down trails to keep going. The curse of a fit horse I guess. Once I am in shape we are doing endurance. I dont think I can do 30-50 mile rides- she can- I cant! LOL

Ha! I hear you. Even with an Imus saddle my body is really only good for about a 3 hour trail ride anymore.

I believe horses can feel any frustration or tension we carry in our body. As you check how she is doing, be sure to check how you are doing. Many times we can over ride and not even know it. Another thought is to check her teeth. Because a familiar trail requires far less reining from the rider and any aggravation that comes from mouth problems will show up more on the rail than on the trail.

I have her teeth done or at least checked every six months. I am a teeth freak! If anything I was more tense when we hit this particular trail because I had to duck and weave and watch for hole and get her to slow down etc. A couple of times I had to pull her to a stop ( she didnt want to ) a few times to keep from getting my head chopped off by low trees/branches! The other times I was just sitting there- half halting when she would step pace (which is unusual for her but she did it off and on that day.) I starting to become concerned that the saddle isnt fitting - next time I ride i will take a pic of the sweat pattern and see what ya'll say.

Someone suggested that she picked her feet up more on the trail- so maybe she is being lazy (so to speak) not picking up her feet enough to stay in an even 4 beat gait Going to try poles. And see if that helps

Poles sound like an excellent idea.

Maybe have her looked at by a reputable chiropractor. I often find that changes in gait are because of an underlying issue of pain or stiffness somewhere in the body.
